"perhaps a little too fast" .. that was my concern when the hire happened .. it appears that was a real concern ..

I wish I felt that JK was a person to make a good hire

I sort of would like to see a few of the BB alums get together and come up with a very short list and it could include Shareef's brother .. a search firm is expensive and my experience in using them when I was in business was that they only brought 'safe' candidates.. the best hire I ever made was outside a search firm

I am unaware of search firms, whether in business or in college athletics, that don't do what the client wants. Give a decent search firm the right instructions, the right criteria for candidates, and they will do what you want.

And the world of college athletics, sometimes, the search firm doesn't even need to "search" at all, but mostly act as an intermediary between the AD and certain candidates (and the candidates' "people"). A good AD who uses a search firm will already have a list of candidates the AD is interested in. If the AD doesn't know what a good list of candidates is to get to the search firm, a few of the BB alums or others the AD works with can up with a very short list. In college athletics, however, if you go to the search firm without the right criteria and suggested candidates, then yep, you're screwed. If you go to the search firm with the right criteria and a list of potential candidates, a good search firm will then use that list, and supplement that list.

It is up to the AD to evaluate the candidates, and direct the search firm not to be limited to "safe" candidates and to make contact with the candidates on the AD's list, whether the AD came up with them or got BB alums or others to help make the list. When the AD doesn't know squat about what makes a good basketball coach (see, e.g., Jim Knowlton), then he needs to get others who do know (BB alums or others who are NOT part of the search firm) to help with the decision.

I have little doubt that, although a search firm was used to hire Fox, the decision was 100% Knowlton's. The search firm, in fact, seemed to do a perfect job of finding the candidate that exactly fit what Knowlton wanted. The only problem is that what Knowlton wanted was absolutely wrong for Cal. Right for Knowlton, sure, but wrong for Cal and the Cal basketball program.

Search firm or no, Cal is screwed in the next MBB HC hire unless either Knowlton is fired before the hire is made, or Knowlton completely changes his criteria for selecting a coach, because. as of now, the hire comes down to Knowlton.

The answer is 2 weeks after the 18-19's last game. Those were an AWFUL 2 weeks as there were rumors that JK was set on bringing Jones back and then the VERY rushed search process which fealt like JK didn't do any work at the tournament.

I know we are VERY down (good reason) on JK but hope is.....

1) He has long ago decided to make this move. All the rumors about passing the tin cup suggest it (and that clearly has legs cause Mark fox seems to know he is a dead man walking).

2) Given a decision to move on, he has taken the past 2 months to get his list together.

The worry is that it starts and stops with Miles. Honestly he is PRECISELY the kind of Guy that JK would like and which he thinks he could sell to his boss. I can hear "doing it the right way" at Nebraska and the importance of managing a P5 program. Gosh I hope he proves me wrong. Another hope? That hiring another white guy to coach mostly black student athletes will not pass the smell test at Berkeley. God I hope so.

Knowlton to Search Firm: "When I look in the mirror, I see the kind of guy I want to hire."

Search Firm: "Does he have to have played ice hockey?'

It'd be good if our next HC were Black, everything else being more or less equal, but more importantly, he needs to be able to effectively communicate with and motivate the young, intelligent, modern athlete.

Miles is from the Dakotas, they love hockey there. Knowlton interviewed him the last time and "the interview went well." Miles is marketing himself as "FEMA" a coach that gets disaster programs to mediocre. I'm sure Knowlton loves that idea, after all, he extended Wilcox out to year 11, not because he thinks he can do better, but because he has been happy enough with the results so far.

Knowlton and sMiles have probably been going to Sharks' games together.

I am ridiculously depressed. I think it Absolutely fair to look at Nebraska POST miles. Hoiberg is a GREAT coach. With the cubboard Miles left he got 7 wins. We are ridiculously F'ed if Miles is hired and will be looking for ANOTHER coach in 5 years and that really will be a zombie resurection project.

Cal lost its final game on March 13. The conference tournament ended March 16. Wyking's firing was announced March 24. Mark Fox was announced March 29.

That timeline would suggest a firing announced ~March 19. With a bland retread coach announced ~March 24.

Not sure when this will get formally announced, but Rothstein says Fox was already let go:
