FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Berkeley, California - The University of California, Berkeley has announced the dismissal of Cal Basketball Coach Mark Fox, effective immediately.
In a statement released by the Athletic Director, Jim Knowlton, he cited the decision as a necessary step to achieve the level of success that the Cal basketball program aspires to achieve. He expressed his gratitude to Coach Fox for his dedication and contributions to the program during his tenure.
Knowlton emphasized that the decision was not an easy one, and that it was made after a thorough evaluation of the program and the team's performance over the past few seasons. Despite the significant investment and resources provided to the program, the team's on-court performance has not met the expectations of the University and the Cal basketball community.
"We expect our basketball program to compete at a high level, and unfortunately, we have not seen the progress we expected under Coach Fox's leadership," Knowlton said. "We believe it is time for a change, and we are committed to finding the right leader who can take our program to the next level."
Coach Fox was hired in 2019 and led the Golden Bears for three seasons. Under his leadership, the team's record was 28-52. During his tenure, the team experienced several ups and downs, including a challenging 2020-21 season that was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The search for a new head coach will begin immediately, and the University is committed to finding a leader who can help the team reach its full potential both on and off the court.
The University wishes Coach Fox all the best in his future endeavors.
