It's not just about a new coaching staff. Things are so fundamentally broken at Cal that the players shouldn't be satisfied with just getting more competent basketball training. The whole experience needs to be rebuilt. I'm sure playing fundamentally sound basketball in an echo chamber in front of 900 listless fans doesn't come close to metting these kids' expectations. I'd advise any of them that are not 100% committed to the academic experience to go and go immediately. This is a years long project even if everything breaks positively and the non-athletic administration really isn't as opposed to winning as I think it is.calfanz said:
in my humble opinion, all the players should just cool their jets (*i know this is really a tough ask) until we get the new coach and staff in place.
Only then can the players evaluate their opportunities going forward. As many players learn, the portal is often a one way ticket out of college hoops....

No.tequila4kapp said:

This is my view. I'm actually reasonably bullish on some of the guys - the ones you listed, Bowser and even Askew. That's a starting 5 that is likely a LOT more effective with real coaching.Big C said:tequila4kapp said:

Some more than others but, basically, no. I'd like to see Okafor, Newell and Celestine come back. A senior or two could take a 5th year, that'd be fine. The new staff will have ample open spots to recruit to, either way. The other returnees can make themselves relevant, or not.
Rodney Brown. And he is free to leave, I believe, despite an LOI, with Fox leaving. He was literally the only reason to keep Fox.tequila4kapp said:

I think Askew would be well-advised to consider Sac St or UC Davis. I won't call him a ball hog because maybe he played the way Fox told him to, but the offense slowed down from its already glacial pace when he had the ball in his hands. In any event, I don't think he's athletic enough for Pac12 play.

Perhaps he can change with a new coach but I agree he was not in anyway getting other players involved to make the sum greater than the parts.
I think all our 3 wins were all without him.
For me "bingo" is about just 3 wins, not about Askew. Let's see how he does with a real coach (if we should hire one).oskidunker said:Bingo!Econ141 said:HearstMining said:

He's already used up his free transfer so he's not likely to be going anywhere else.HearstMining said:

hearst, devin's moms is a doc who graduated from the ucsf med school & she wuz the force behind his transfer to berkeley, there's zero chance he's gonna transfer with moms approval unless its harvard or stanford
askew is gonna flourish playing for joe pasternack not playing out of position as a point guard but rather as a scoring 2 next to facilitator ajay mitchell
My impression was that Askew: (i) was asked to do way too much on really bad team; and (ii) was forced to take a lot of really hard shots with the clock expiring because Cal had no offense. Not only was Cal's roster poor as constructed, but there were so many injuries that Askew was really the only guy who could generate any offense. And then he wore down given the unreasonably work load . . .calumnus said:Shocky1 said:

Askew mostly played alongside facilitator, PG Joel Brown, though obviously was his only backup too, since Fox appeared to really resist playing Wren Robinson.
I will withhold judgement on Askew. He clearly shot too much this year, forced too many shots, but while his FGA per 100 attempts was 27.1 at Cal, it was only 8.0 at Texas and 11.2 at Kentucky, so he is not innately a ball hog. I think Fox forced him into "hero ball at the buzzer" role previously occupied by Bradley, Shepard and was supposed to be Clayton this year.
I'd like to think taking fewer shots next year would increase his effectiveness, but his FG% at Cal (.378) is consistent with his FG% at Texas (.400) and Kentucky (.345).
My biggest issue with him as a 2 is he is not a good 3 pt shooter: .299 at Cal and .295 on his career.
If he develops his 3 shot in the off-season, great. Otherwise, I hope we have someone better and he fills in as the senior back-up PG (at this point he is our starting point).
in any case, no matter what, getting a Cal degree instead of a Kentucky degree will have been a good move, and that it was all paid for by basketball should make his mom happy.

I think he's potentially a good player on a better roster. Maybe not as a lead guy, but certainly a starter or perhaps the first combo guard off the bench.
