Jerome Randle Says His `Dream' Is To Become Cal's Head Coach

I feel like being able to connect with players, being able to recruit players . . . I've been developing players all over the world," he said. "So the connections that I have to bring in five-star athletes are at the snap of a finger for me. My passion is developing kids. Especially here, I feel like I came here for a reason, to be able to connect with kids that don't have opportunities to go to college."

"To win the (2010) Pac-10 championship after 50 years, that pride is still there," Randle said. "But I don't have anything to brag about as of right now. That's what hurts my heart more than anything, where everybody's talking about March Madness and their school. I can't chime in on the conversation. It kind of pisses me off, excuse my language, it actually does."

Given the fact that Cal is extremely unlikely to hire even one of its former great players as head coach without some history on the bench, Randle said he might welcome the chance to serve as assistant to the new man.

"That's the plan. I'm hoping they hire someone that wants to be at Cal, and not using it as an opportunity to go somewhere else. The Cal family needs some type of stability," he said.

"You need to see someone there who wants to be there. Cal is unique. You can't just go hire anybody. They have to know about the area. They have to know about Cal. You've got to understand that it's not like every other school. You've got to know how to maneuver through the Cal ways. That's cool. It's a unique place that's why we all love it. I think the time is now."

He has no doubt the Cal athletic administration is aware he has interest in assisting the program.

"They know," he said. "Do they take it serious? Who knows? It's something I definitely want to pursue. I definitely would love to be there."

Love JR and his ongoing passion for Cal hoops. Hire as an assistant?

Now, this gets me excited about hoops.
JR would be great addition to coaching staff. Passionate about Cal, energetic, new coaching blood, was a point guard, which is a plus. I remember him crying before the Senior game.

Guys need to be willing to work their way up the ranks, which likely involves taking assorted-level gigs at smaller programs. Not just for the sake of their resume, but for what they will learn about how to be a successful college coach.

If they are doing well and we like the fact that they are Cal guys, we can then fast-track them.

We can do the Major League Baseball trend, of hiring former players to be manager without any coaching/managing experience.

There is a part of me that thinks the old adage (as opposed to a young adage) that you "gotta pay your dues" to be a successful coach came out of the same Coaching Fraternity Rule Book used by every color commentator on PAC 12 Network this season that told us what a great coach Mark Fox is. Every rule in the book is custom tailored to insulate the fraternity.

With that said, since Jerome Randle raised it, I would love to have him as an assistant coach and Theo Robertson as well (putting them both on the "dues paying" track to a HC gig). Let's just hope we don't have another Maui Classic incident where Theo got into a dust up with Wyking Jones because he spotted the ineptness at Season Ground Zero, whereas the AD had to be hit on the head with a 16 consecutive loss 2 x 4 to experience his moment of clarity.

If the next coach doesn't have a bench staff slot for Jerome, there are other ways he can be part of the program and start the dues paying process. If this doesn't happen for such a golden bear as Jerome, then we are in worse shape than I thought.

Jerome J. Randle (born May 21, 1987) is an American-Ukrainian professional basketball player who plays for US Monastir. He played college basketball for the California Golden Bears before playing professionally in Turkey, Israel, Ukraine, Belgium, Australia, Lithuania, France, Germany and Russia. He has a Ukrainian passport and represented Ukraine at EuroBasket 2015.

While playing for the Golden Bears, Randle was a two-time first-team All-Pac-10 honoree and won the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2010. He was named to the Pac-12 Hall of Honor in January 2017.

Randle began his National Basketball League (NBL) career in 2015 with the Adelaide 36ers. He was named to the All-NBL First Team in his first season and then went on to win a championship in Lithuania while earning LKL Finals MVP honors. In his second season with Adelaide, he was named the NBL's Most Valuable Player after helping the 36ers win the minor premiership. He spent the next two seasons with the Sydney Kings, before returning to Adelaide in 2019.

Jerome's vagabond life on international teams would suggest that he could leverage this experience and become a powerful international recruiter as an assistant coach on the men's team or the Head Coach of the women's team.

I say we hire JR, screw paying dues! He's a major upgrade to Fox and wants the job! It's time to think out of the box Wyking n Fox we're historically horrible, why not JR!

I mentioned JR as HC on a different thread and was really just talking out my arce but I would consider it. We are a mess right now and have some struggles other P5 teams don't have so throwing conventional wisdom out the window should be considered. I have no doubt JR could recruit, could get the best out of the players and also have the passion to work through challenges. We can backfill X and O guys but you can't fake the "it" factor which JR possesses. NBA teams hire guys as HC right when their playing career ends so why not hire a Cal legend now.

I'd like a Head Coach who has some experience training to be a college head coach: hiring a staff, recruiting for a West Coast program, running practices, etc. As Beached Bear said, let Randle start the process. I really regret that Theo's stay on the Cal staff was so short and ended badly, but in the years since, he hasn't really shown that he is serious about trying again. Great Golden Bears: would love to have either of them at Cal again, in some capacity.

Bring him in as an assistant.

Too bad he couldn't have been interim head coach because someone took so long to fire Fox.

my understanding is teams can add two non-recruiting coaches this upcoming season

if that's the case, the first on the list should be Randle for skill training. It's tough to get a lot of skill training in the regular basketball practice, but I'm sure Randle would improve players' ball handling and shooting skills, even if it's partly by working with them outside of practice

he has an elite handle, is an elite shooter, and can do all the shots including finishing at the rim, tear drops, etc, and as a pro, has also improved his passing

he does a lot of skill training in the offseason, and I just saw this tiktoker including him in their video. I started practicing this move and it's quite effective when a defender gets right in your space

I know we're getting ahead of ourselves with this, but it sounds as though his greatest value at this point might be his extensive and current international contacts, and their relation to recruiting. If he were to be part of the new coach's staff, I would want to tap into those contacts.

I hope to God, that if a person on this board who has any influence (or modicum of pride) and at that time advocated for Fox please recuse themselves from any further influence here. Not welcome

The standard should't be whether someone is an upgrade over Fox, which is surmise though probably correct. But so what? It's hard to think of any potential candidate who wouldn't be. The standard ought to be whether the new guy can build Cal up to Pac-level contender status.

I think he'd be a great assistant though because I think with his experience playing around the world and his passion he'd recruit like a demon.
