I'd definitely take him over JP. Amir has that "it" factor, that can't be easily quantified. And add Jerome Randle to the coaching staff??? Wow. Yeah, I'm dreaming.

At this point, would rather just hand the reins to Jerome than Miles.

While I agree about the "it" factor, the lack of sustained success, his non-west coast ties and unfamiliarity with UCs is a concern for me. Yes, he's got charisma and can light up a room. But will he be shocked once he discovers all the issues in Berkeley?

To me this is the unknown. Martin didn't. It clearly frustrated him and while I don't think we keep him from bolting from mizzu it played a factor.

A name I have been hearing as well is Bob Marlin from Louisiana. I know he has more recruiting ties to the Texas/Louisiana region, but he was able to get Jordan Brown out of the transfer portal who has PAC12 ties (Arizona). As well as a San Jose St. transfer.

This is where having SAR as his big brother might factor in. Surely the two of them would be talking a lot before he would accept the job here. And afterwards, as well.

I'm still on the fence with AAR. Are we really going to hire back-to-back coaches from Georgia? But, I listened to a couple interviews of him this morning and the more he talks, the more I like him. If we have lost out on JP as Shocky may have alluded to, let's bring Amir on board.

I hope he can coach a faster game than his brother's Cal team played, back in the day. Watching the ball go to in to Sharif, and then with his teammates all standing on the opposite sideline watching Sharif with all his deliberate moves, jockeying back and forth, backing his man toward the basket, until he got close, and turning and scoring, which was deadly and effective, but it was as thrilling as watching paint dry. The game is so much faster now.

That Cal team with Shareef, Ed Gray, Tremaine Fowlkes, et al averaged 75.6 points per game which has only been exceeded by a Cal team once since.

We have just finished a season where we were the lowest scoring team in the entire country, #363, the slowest playing team in the entire country according to Ken Pom. Often our offense was pass it into Lars who you praised. While I supported you in your defense of Lars (our best player) the irony of calling Shareef "slow and deliberate" should be obvious.

Amir's team was the #121 team in tempo so pretty average. The concern is they were pretty average in offensive and defensive efficiency also (though at a program that never won before). Nothing like Gates. We missed out on a Cal alum/great coach.

FWIW, UCSB was #305 in tempo, so almost as slow as a Cal, but with a much more efficient offense (lead by Shocky's tauted PG Ajay Mitchell).

That was more on Bozeman than Shareef (or his younger brother). Bozeman was not a real Xs and Os coach at that stage. Furthermore, Shareef was so far ahead of everyone else - that I think there was a bit of amazement from his teammates. I do know they all got along real well and Bozeman supported good team chemistry.

That team with Shareef, Ed Gray, Tremaine Folwkes, Randy Duck, Tony Gonzalez was high scoring and much more fun than "watching paint dry" even though Jelani Gardner was not a good PG.

His description of Shareef (dump it into the post and everyone stands around whike he backs his guy down) sounds more like a description of Lampley and Powe in Braun's offense. Or McNamera in Kutchen's.

Shareef was a polished offensive player as a freshman which is why he received all the accolades he did and was a lottery pick. "Slow and deliberate" is not how I would describe him at all.

The video is a cherry pick. A 3-minute highlight video of Cal's best game of the 1996 season, defeating #9 ranked Arizona in Harmon, is great eye candy, but it does not accurately describe Cal's play in most games that season. Cal also lost to that same Arizona team at the end of the season in Tucson. That Cal team was loaded with really good players, and yet they finished only 17-11. They played great against Northern Arizona, scoring 111 points, but they only averaged 75 points for the season. Cal was ranked #118 in the nation in scoring in 1996. If they had always played like the video highlights in the Arizona game, fast-breaking on most possessions, they would have been scoring in the 90s most nights, which indicates that they also played a lot of half court, and not the transition game they wanted. The fact is that they played 8 games against ranked teams and won only two, Arizona and Stanford.

Here is a full game video of Cal vs #17 Iowa State in the NCAA Round 1, where Cal was outsmarted, outgunned, and out-defended Shareef was held to just 7 points. They took Shareef out of his game, and forced Cal out of transition, into a half court game, and beat Cal with their own fast break offense.

Hall of Fame Coach George Raveling, the color man on this video: "Throughout the season, Shareef seemed to disappear at times for pockets of minutes, where he never took a shot. I think he gets frustrated when his teammates do not get the ball to him, and then he moves outside to where they can pass to him. But outside is not Shareef's game. His game is inside, near the basket." And this: "Iowa is using 6-4 Kenny Pratt on Rahim at 6-10, and right now he is beating him up." "He is smothering Shareef inside, and outside, he is beating him to the spot."

That is what I was referring to. I never said what you accused me of, that his teammates "dumped the ball into Shareef in the post". That is a rhetorical trick, changing someone's words to mean what you want them to mean. I was referring to the times when Shareef was forced to move outside the three point line, often to the sideline, and his teammates gave him the ball there. If no one came out to guard him. he often shot a three, and if they did guard him, he would turn his back to the defender, and with his dribble and feints, expertly back his man all the way from the sideline to within 5 or 10 feet of the basket, into the post, and then turn and shoot, usually scoring when he did so. I don't blame Shareef for playing like this, and neither did Coach Raveling. It is the failure of his teammates to find him in the post with a pass and a failure of his coaches to find ways for him to get open, so his teammates could pass to him in the post.

Shareef was a center or a forward. His game was inside, near the basket. He was a great talent, a scorer, not a facilitator (He averaged only one assist per game). He was only as good offensively as his coach and his teammates determined he would be, because they decided where and when they would pass him the ball. And he did not get it nearly as much as he would have liked. With his ability, he probably could have averaged 35 points per game, instead of 21.
