There's a lot of misinformation and poor reporting out there.

The most complete and updated information is found on BIs Haas Pavilion board.

Cal is down to a small handful of finalists for the broader community. 2nd interviews are being done tonight and tomorrow morning. I'd expect a decision to be made in the next 48 hours.

But doesn't the Knowlton investigation threaten to complicate this big time? Does a coach want to come here if the guy who hires him is about to get canned? What a mess.

Having Knowone at AD is better than having Knowlton as AD.

I heard Bennett interviewed…but that would be related to a motive having nothing to do with ever wanting to coach Cal.

I have to wonder why Bennett would want the Cal job. He's 60 and has created a good thing at St. Mary's. At Cal he'd have to start all over in a relatively hostile environment with uncertainty in the AD position and the conference.

However I can see Knowlton preferring Bennett as the safest choice. At this time the last thing Knowlton needs is another controversy.

My own preference is for JP because I think he's the best fit for this particular job. If he's not hired I'd be happy with AAR or MM, both have coached for shorter times at smaller schools but look promising. I'm not sure about SJ because I don't see a winning record and I don't know the context.

I posted this thought previously:

If Randy is looking to retire in a couple of years, he can bank a quick $5 to $6M at Cal before being scapegoated and sh@it canned. He would have to work more years at SMC to bank that kind of scratch.*

*I always viewed Monty's foray into the NBA as part of a greater retirement plan. He made millions before getting curbed.

Well I guess he's not that crazy about the finalists. Or they're not that crazy about him. Or maybe it's the finalist singular.

I felt he improved some. As a freshman, he was more content to hang out beyond the 3-point circle and shoot from there. This season, he seemed more aggressive, drove inside more, and was learning to finish. He somehow lost his shooting touch from deep over the summer, and this continued at Cal. His rebounding did not improve, but I felt his defense did improve. He cut his turnovers per minute by a third. He always hustled, had a great motor, and I think he enjoyed playing for Fox. I will miss his enthusiasm, especially late in games where he tried to fire up his teammates.

Please tell me there's no one in this team upset about Fox getting canned. If so, I hope those guys find a happy home.

Great points- mostly lamentable that he has the physical attributes but couldn't find his shooting stroke this season. I wish him well though I am interested to see what kind of programs are after him- frankly many of our guys in the portal would not start or be early off the bench for many power teams. Completely agreed about his energy and willingness to amp up the team and crowd!

It would make sense to wait and see who the new coach is before entering the portal, maybe even after talking with them. It does seem like he may now know who the coach is going to be. Or maybe he just wants to be recruited back? I could see him end up at another UC or in the Ivy League.

I have it from a very well source that Cal has bagged its next HC:

Alan Heter, assistant coach of the Washington Generals. 10 year $30M contract. Coach Heter has recruited his first player. Richard Head of Faber College has just entered the portal for transport to Berkeley. Last season as PG he averaged 2.1 PTS 0 AST and 15 TO.

Richard shown here practicing with the Generals last summer.

AD Knowlton on the hire: "The investigation is almost complete. Adios motherf@uckers!"

The Mavs not making the playoffs after signing Kyrie would be a pretty big fumble. Are we waiting for Kidd at this point? Please yes

Jason Kidd would be an unbelievable hire which means there is no chance it happens. Cal doesn't have nice things.

We might hire Randy Duck, though.

I can imagine that, with each passing day of having Kyrie Irving on one's roster, the HC wants to keep his job a little bit less.

Cuban doesnt care about buy out $$. Fire Kidd, pay him $15M, Cal gets him for a hometown "Berkeley Bargain", fills Haas every night.

I think this is an intriguing strategy. Maybe we can get Shareef and Sean Marks to pull some strings and get as many toxic personalities on the Mavs as possible...

Cal Bears having success all over the place except at Cal.

That is pretty typical for us actually. Our undergrads have a hard time getting into our grad schools and then kill it elsewhere, too. We have so much self-loathing.

It is not self-loathing. Our administrators are almost never Cal grads. Then they hire (and overpay) people who are also not Cal grads. The process that leads to the hiring of a chancellor is 100% focused on academic administration. It almost guarantees someone who is not qualified to oversee P5 athletics as well.

I would imagine the process of selecting a Chancellor at Cal is very similar to that of UCLA, no?

By the way, I think having an academic focus is the correct tack being that we are an educational and research institution.

I just wonder why we so often overlook our own alumni.
