Seems that Texas might want to keep him:

If Texas beats Xavier and advances to the Elite 8, i have to think that Terry loses the interim tag and gets the UT job full time.

I can't imagine Terry would consider Cal unless/until Texas had told him he would not be retained. And since Texas is still in the tourney, there is no way they have told Terry that (yet). While I'm sure Cal would be interested, I don't see Cal waiting for Terry to figure out his status. So I think this is just his agent blowing smoke.

The way Cal does things, the investigation of Knowlton will take 8 months. So, Knowlton will be selecting the new coach so that we'll have one for the upcoming season.

Dear Cal Athletics Community,

I am honored to announce that Mark Fox will be returning as the head coach of the men's basketball program at the University of California, Berkeley. As we move forward, it is important to recognize that Coach Fox's leadership and character are what make him the ideal candidate for this position, not just his on-court success.

Coach Fox previously served as the head coach of the Golden Bears from [insert years], where he faced a number of significant challenges both on and off the court. Despite these obstacles, he demonstrated tremendous leadership, resilience, and dedication to our student-athletes. He developed a culture of excellence and accountability, and worked tirelessly to provide our student-athletes with the support and resources they needed to succeed both academically and athletically.

It is important to note that we are not solely evaluating Coach Fox based on his win-loss record. While we all want to see our teams succeed on the court, we recognize that there are many factors that contribute to a successful program. Coach Fox has demonstrated a commitment to our student-athletes' well-being and development that extends far beyond the basketball court.

I want to express my gratitude to our administration, coaches, and staff who have worked tirelessly throughout this process to identify the best candidate for this position. I also want to thank our fans and supporters for their continued dedication and passion for Cal Athletics.

Please join me in welcoming Coach Fox back to Cal and in supporting him and our men's basketball program as they continue to navigate these challenging times.

Go Bears!

Sincerely,

Jim Knowlton
Director of Athletics, University of California, Berkeley

Then his first season. That was such a good season (and even overcoming the loss of Ed Gray in the last game of the season) I thought he was the best coach ever. Bozeman didn't leave the cupboard bare.

Yeah, EMU downed Duke on its way to the Sweet 16.

Amazing that after losing 3 MCD AAs and another successful NBA player, Bozeman still hadn't left the cupboard bare.

Yeah, though iirc Cal was picked preseason to finish 8th or something like that in conference. And I recall Braun or someone on his staff remarking that some of the bigs (Yogi in particular) didn't have any kind of go-to offensive moves. In hindsight there was a lot of talent on that '97 squad but going in it wasn't so apparent. That Ed Gray injury is still something I lament to this day. I loved that team.

Best team we've had in the post-Newell era. With Gray, they go to the Final Four. Without them, they made Sweet Sixteen and had a lead on North Carolina before Tony G. ran out of gas in the second half. That team had all the pieces.

That #1 seed UNC team was no slouch either. They went to the Final Four with Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Ed Cota and a few other good players.

I've always wondered about that. Cal went on to play its best basketball of the season after the Gray injury by beating the eventual NCAA champion Arizona and making it to the Sweet 16. With Ed Gray and the best offensive performance of his career, they couldn't beat Wasu.

As I recall, Jamison just killed us in that game. Without Gray's 23 ppg, Tony had to take on a lot of the scoring load, in addition to defending and rebounding. With Gray, I think we do a better job on Jamison, and beat NC.

As an aside, I played golf with Jim Burr, one of the officials in that game, the prior winter when Cal was playing in the Maui classic, I played with him, another ref from the east, and Hank Nichols, who arranged for the officials at the Maui tournament, and was already, or was on his way to, becoming the supervisor of officials for the NCAA.

They didn't know anything about Cal, and asked me if we were any good. I said no one knew it yet, but if Ed Gray had improved as much over the prior off season as in the previous two, he would be the best player on the West Coast, and we would make some noise. That was one of my all-time predictions, as Ed was the consensus Pac-12 POY. Breaking his ankle in the last regular season game is one of my all-time regrets.

I'm assuming it was a match-ups issue, because I just looked up the season results and we beat them in two overtimes at Harmon.

Wasn't Gray a transfer who was only at Cal for two years? Seem to recall he played at Tennessee right out of HS, then went to a JC before coming to Cal.

He was definitely a transfer, but my recollection is he played one year at Tennessee, then transferred to Cal, sat out and played three years, but my memory is bad for stuff like that. I'm fairly sure at that time he would have had to sit out a year.

He scored 48, which is still the single-game record, and broke his foot. I had thought it was the last game of the year, but they actually played two more games after that, before the tournament.

Ah yes! I actually went to the game against U of A at gosh I forgot the name of the arena near south sf. That was UofA's last loss of the season before winning the NCAA tourney so you know we could have gone really far.

Pretty sure he played one year at Tennessee, then went to a JC (College of Southern Idaho, IIRC) for a year, and then to Cal for two years. Because of the JC year, he didn't have to have a sit out year, but only had two years left when he got to Berkeley.
