Gray actually stopped by that vaunted JC powerhouse College of Southern Idaho in between Tennessee and Cal. Played two years at Cal…….Bozeman's last and Braun's first.

The second season I think he had a ridiculous streak of like 15 straight double digit scoring halves.

How much time was left in that game when Gray went down, 4-5 minutes? I remember thinking he was certain to get well over 50; he was still heating up!

They didn't know anything about Cal, and asked me if we were any good. I said no one knew it yet, but if Ed Gray had improved as much over the prior off season as in the previous two, he would be the best player on the West Coast, and we would make some noise. That was one of my all-time predictions, as Ed was the consensus Pac-12 POY. Breaking his ankle in the last regular season game is one of my all-time regrets.

Actually glad we didn't go with Rodney Terry. His record at Fresno State and UTEP was decidedly uninspiring and one Sweet 16 run doesn't make up for that. Good luck to Texas, but I won't be surprised if there's buyers remorse in a few years.

And he scored what like 50 points in that game? Another one of Cal's what if scenarios!
He scored 48, which is still the single-game record, and broke his foot. I had thought it was the last game of the year, but they actually played two more games after that, before the tournament.


Ah yes! I actually went to the game against U of A at gosh I forgot the name of the arena near south sf. That was UofA's last loss of the season before winning the NCAA tourney so you know we could have gone really far.

Edit: oh yeah! Cow Palace lol
That was a hell of a game, even watching it from some of many rather obstructed seats on the floor level.
