I thought the point is, all things being equal, in this case with AAR, Stan Johnson, Madsen, you have not a ton of HC experience, some metrics of success but not a rocketship/slam dunk hire, limited NIL experience, and deep mid-majorish competition being your 'proving' ground. And time and time again, NCAA schools look at coaches with similar resumes, and choose the white guy. Madsen might be fine, might be great. But I think AAR has similar or higher upside, with a similar resume, and the attention and interest of some of your key NBA alums, with potential NIL investment attached. Framing it as players limit THEIR options by preferring an AA head coach proves the point that Cal had an opportunity to gets looks from recruits they might not otherwise.
