Pillars of the rebuild:

1. Recruiting- keep the best California players at Cal
2. Aggressive in the transfer portal
3. Recruit nationally/internationally
4. Player development -- just like Phil Jackson talked to Madsen about the triangle offense
5. Style of play- uptempo, fast. Plays to strengths of players
6. Off the court- amazing academics, Cameron Institute
7. Family atmosphere - treat players like his own kids
8. Preparation - nobody will outwork us
9. Staff - is currently finalizing members
10. NIL - Believes Cal is on the path to becoming leader nationally for NIL (and playing by rules). NOT pay to play. Community & youth engagement
11. Admissions - Cal is #1 public school in the world. Thus need to cast a broad net. Talking with admissions to go case by case
12. Past players/coaches - Will connect with them

A vision of hanging banners. A vision of traffic to come watch Cal. A vision of greatness
The traffic is already here.
Go Bears!

I can so see guys like Joel brown flourishing under Mad Dog. maximizing strengths-- his speed is insane
Isn't Brown in the portal?
Yes. He could come back. Ill let Madsen decide. No comment.
^^. Joel's speed is unbelievable and with better skills development I think he could be a fantastic weapon off the bench or as part of a second unit. Mad Dog could utilize him well. Every team could use a guy who can just get to the rim
Brown's problem was never getting to the rim. It's what he did once he got there.
He never passed out.

I think Madsen can help Joel. Fox's development abilities are overrated if not criminally bad

Bozeman. Madsen talked about meeting with Campanelli and the interest stopped with the coaching change. I think Madsen would have committed to Stanfurd before Braun was hired.

Isn't Brown graduating? Regardless of the fact that he has a year to play, doesn't he need to apply and get into grad school? Inquiring minds want to know.

Says that very few players want to play slow. He doesn't want to recruit slow players

Cal won their games this past season when they did play uptempo rather than "slow down and pray it's close enough to steal a win" advocated by he who shall not be named anymore.

He is prepared for the question but getting a little tired of the questions about that Junior University.

yeah I wish we'd cool it with the furd questions. clearly becoming quite redundant and not fair to him

Smooth answer about the current players.
Smooth answer about the state of the program and why he is optimistic.
I think, in general, he is just real smooth.

Probably, but Madsen went on a two year Mormon mission. He enrolled at Stanford in 1996 as a 20(?) year old freshman, same year Braun became the Cal coach.

I love how he answers all questions directly and completely, yet doesn't drag on and on. Passionate and concise speech, a great new combo and not one we've had from a Cal basketball or football coach in quite some time.

SO much better than Fox, press conferences will be enjoyable again, but press conferences were not a problem previous to Fox. Though now they will be a distinct positive.

Hoping his personality on infectious and he is our Ted Lasso.

I can imagine Bozeman being less interested than Campanelli, and Madsen specifically mentioned Campanelli recruiting him.

Overall I was pleased Christ and Knowlton kept their predictable remarks brief, although Knowlton went on a little longer than necessary.

My overall take is Madsen was relentlessly positive. Every time he got a question with negative connotations he gave a positive answer. I hope that's genuine, not just public speaking. Also he turned many topics to relevant personal anecdotes, emphasizing an aspect of his personality seemingly missing or suppressed in his predecessor. And I think not mentioning his predecessor was far better than damning with faint praise. I remember him talking only about his high school coaches, his NBA coach, and just a bit about Braun and Campanelli.

I'm glad Madsen mentioned discussing each current player's goals on and off the court. His only answer which I thought pertained to a particular player was his comment about wanting fast big guys and not slow big guys.

I'd say "excited" was the most overused word of the afternoon. Perhaps the theme of the occasion.

Mark Madsen is the best thing that could happen to Cal. What a class act!! I was ready to like him…now I love the guy. Seems like the kinda of guy who is so intense yet so nice that it creates this larger than life presence and fills a room. Even the media was a little afraid of him in a weird way. I hope he does well here. It will take a team effort. NIL money will be key. And support from the institution. If he gets that, then look out!!

Mark should have given him a piece of chocolate, a yoyo, patted him on the head and told him to leave the stage.

Not only the same year Braun became the Cal coach, but the same month.

Bozeman got fired right at the end of August 1996, Braun got hired a couple of weeks later in the middle of September 1996, I think his press conference was September 15. A very odd time to be hiring a coach, Tom Asbury and Sherm DIllard were the supposedly the other two finalists, I'd say we got lucky to get Braun.

Madsen was starting at Stanford that month, following his 2 year mission. Yes, it was clearly Bozeman who was the coach when the interest in Madsen stopped.

I'm sure a lot of us connected with what he had to say about becoming fan on those 90s teams. He said he met Kidd, Lamond, Buckley on a recruiting trip. Lamond judged his high school dunk contest. He said the girls at his high school all had crushes on Randy Duck. He recalled his battles against Gonzalez and Lampley. Called out Leon multiple times who's in attendance. LOVED HEARING THIS.

I love that so much. Thanks for sharing those comments.

Not trying to get too enamored with Madsen on day 1 but his charisma is off the charts compared to Fox. His candor is so refreshing. Nailed that intro!
My wife's grandmother was a very serious, fairly dour Missouri farm woman. Her charisma was off the charts compared to Fox.

So let's expand the vision. Madsen has more charisma than any basketball (or football) coach Cal has had in my time as a Cal fan, starting in 1974, and it is off the charts compared to at least most of them.

He won the press conference by a lot, let's hope the winning continues on the court!!

Probably prior to it being clear he was going to take a mission. Cal has recruited a lot of LDS players in football, even with Holmoe as Head Coach. Have any ever commited, taken a two-year mission, and then enrolled at Cal? One problem is I think you can only defer admission for one year without having to reapply? Madden obviously had the grades but it is far easier at Stanford.

As forwards in his three years Bozeman brought in:
Michael Stewart
Tremaine Folwkes
Sean Marks
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
