I'm at a casino in Tahoe and randomly met Bill McClintock earlier this evening. Bill was a National Champion and a forward on our great late 50's and early 60's teams including the '59 squad who beat Jerry West's West Virginia squad and Oscar Robertson's Cincinnati squad en route to the national title.

We got to talking a little bit about Madsen and the state of the program and he was very complimentary and firmly believes we have the infrastructure in place to get this thing turned around including proper focus on NIL and the portal. He also joked (or half-joked) that he would've made so much money if NIL had been available back then for him or if he was playing now.

Anyway it was just a fun chance encounter with a great bear and a legend of The University of California

It's great to hear that one of our Cal legends, now in his 80s, is still healthy, active and invested in Cal basketball.

I can't believe there are Cal revenue sport nation champs still with us. Go Bears!

Meeting Bill McClintock and having a conversation with him must have been special. For those who might not know or remember, McClintock arrived at Cal as a 22 year old sophomore in the Fall of 1959. A year or so earlier, Pete Newell (whom the local press said wasn't a good recruiter) somehow discovered ex-Marine Corps Veteran McClintock working in a factory in Milwaukee. He was 6'-4" tall, built like a linebacker, and played what today would be called a power forward. He more than held his own against taller players. A fine rebounder, scorer, and defender.

Pete brought Bill to Monterey, where he attended Monterey Peninsula College. After his freshman year at MPC, Bill transferred to Berkeley, where he would go on to star for Cal, starting at power forward for three seasons, winning the 1959 NCAA championship, and two Conference championships, along with a runnerup in the 1960 NCAA. In 1961, McClintock played his final year at Cal, and led the Cal team in scoring and rebounding. He was named to the All Conference team in 1960 and 1961. McClintock would return to Monterey peninsula College as their head basketball coach. He later would coach in Pete Newell's Big Man's Camp teaching skills to many college and NBA players for several years, and he eventually would take over the Camp to continue to teach skills to young and veteran players. The Bill McClintock vs. Tom Merschery (St. Mary's) match ups were like two rhinos banging away on the court. Both of the same general dimensions and aggressiveness, and both skilled players, it was great to see them go to battle...BTW, 6'4" and probably 230+ at that time was almost like a LeBron body on the court today. You really did not want to be playing against him. On the '59 team (3rd String I think) was the other bookend that you did not want to mix it up with (Joe Kapp)..Great games in old Harmon with Pete Newell at the helm.
