"By making All-NBA, Jaylen Brown qualified to receive a five-year, $295 million supermax extension this summer, which would be the largest contract in NBA history. If he hadn't made All-NBA, his max would have been four years, $189 million."

If I were Jaylen, I'd most certainly toss one of these 300 millions toward the NIL program.

Happy to see this for a player who embodies the spirit of our beloved University.

Enjoy seeing the great things he does on and off the court.

Marietta has a very cool downtown area. As a "sister city," Berkeley would be a be, shall we say, a different color of political preference lol....

Atlanta and it's suburbs have changed rapidly over the last 20 years. The city of Marietta is now majority non-white and voted for Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in the last two presidential elections. Plus Stacy Abrams for Governor. Ossoff and Warnock for Senator.

A city of only a little more than 60,000, Marietta has 6 mosques or Islamic study centers.

Jaylen Brown, Shareef and Amir Abdur-Rahim, are great representatives of Marietta and love Berkeley as well.

I definitely was going by the congressional district, the greater Marietta area...like where I used to live (long time ago, and for 8 years). ....I was in downtown Marietta near the square, a year ago...enjoyed it...work takes me back there every now and then.
But yeah, my bad...joke gone wrong...called me out, I deserved it.

Ok, gotcha.

Yeah, the Congressional District is a gerrymandered safe Republican district, 67% white, including a little piece of Fulton County (Atlanta), Marietta in Cobb County, then huge swaths of much more suburban/rural areas to the north of Cobb County including all of Bartow, Cherokee and Pickens counties.

I'm sure there are equivalent places in the Bay Area but: I use to live about mile or two from Cherokee County (in Cobb) and everyone told me that I "lived so far out..." Now, that's nothing, especially relative to growth at 75 and 285...and in relationship to the Braves home!

"By the numbers: Tatum shot a blistering 17-28 from the field (61%), including 6-10 from deep, to break Steph Curry's Game 7 record set two weeks ago against the Kings (50 points).

He also added 13 rebounds and 5 assists, joining Wilt Chamberlain (1964), Rick Barry (1967), Russell Westbrook (2017) and Jamal Murray (2020) as just the fifth player in NBA history with a 50-10-5 playoff game."

Cal got a bit of a shout out on TV tonight while Jaylen was at the free throw line in the first half. Stan Van Gundy said Brown spent a year at the University of California, "the premier institution of the entire California university system." When Reggie Miller loudly moaned in objection, Kevin Harlan told Van Gundy "well said!"

Tatum's 3 turnovers in the last 2 minutes were embarrassing. The two I recall are the direct pass to Jimmy Butler and the no release jump shot where he went up to launch, hoped for a collision from a charging defender that never arrived and then came back to earth with the ball in hands (looking like an embarrassed 4th grader).

In fairness to those who have criticized Jaylen's game at Cal, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. With all the hype I figured he would be pure pleasure to watch like Ed Gray and J Kidd. Instead, he had an inconsistent jump shot and his handles were suspect (he dribbled in a lot of straight lines).

I did recognize that he had a lightening fast 1st step towards the hoop and explosive hops. I never, ever, expected him to develop into the player he has become. I was a scouting failure on him. Good that someone in the Boston organization saw it.

Me too. I instead criticized the idiot PAC-12 refs and their rewarding of other teams' players that jumped in front of him and flopped. The opposing coaches mostly adopted the strategy but knew the reality and voted Jaylen Freshman of the Year and All PAC-12.

Others criticized a great Cal player, possibly as part of their incessant criticism of the Cal coach, trying to find reasons to denigrate a great season where we won every game at Haas and earned our highest seed in the Tournament ever, then finally being "proved right" when the team flamed out with injuries at guard, a coach dismissed and the university launching a bogus investigation of Martin the day before the team left for the Tournament.

Keith Smith!!! Got me down memory lane. JB's analogy on those teams might be Roy Fisher (albeit way more talented). This old LA Times article was great: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-03-08-sp-2845-story.html

Thanks for the post and the link to the LA Times article. Good to hear again about Cal's success in that period, led by Lou Campanelli, (often-maligned (on this board) and Gary Colson, the offensive mastermind. The article's a keeper.

Jaylen's improvement in offensive prowess has been remarkable . He's become a good 3 point shooter, a good mid-range shooter and has an outstanding repertoire of finishes around the basket, all of which were undeveloped at Cal.

I wrote here on a few occasions that Jaylen Brown had a very effective forearm with which he protected himself and the ball from defenders who tried to stop or hinder his drives to the basket. He would go so far as to punch defenders in the chest on his drives and was not called for a foul by the refs. Thus the defenders were encouraged to flop when Brown drove, as they had no choice. Coaches likely encouraged it, because Brown was not a very good foul shooter, and so fouling him was a good trade-off to get the ball back, without him scoring much. I think, but can't prove it, that the refs protected Brown. Most great players are protected by the ref, because the great players are the ones who sell tickets. It is even more so in the NBA, as the stars are protected. Think of Wilt or Kareem. It was a major event if either one was ever called for a foul. This is no criticism of Brown, it is a criticism of a system of favoritism. And all players will continue to look for an edge, look for moves they can make to get an advantage against an opponent, maybe something that is against the rules, something that the refs will let slide.

Brown made one of the most spectacular plays I have ever seen, and he did it more than once while playing for Cal. I don't remember the opponents, but I remember Brown losing the ball on a fast break, and having recovered, he raced down the court at full speed, and caught up with the dribbler from behind, as the the dribbler pulled up for a jump shot, and Brown made a leap, and blocked the shot from behind, and no foul was called on Brown. I was watching carefully, and I didn't see Brown foul either. At least 99 times out of 100, any player who blocks a shot from behind like that will be called for a foul, but Brown was never called for a foul. He blocked at least 3 or 4 shots from behind that season, and was never called for a foul. And I don't think there was a foul. Truly a great athlete.

5 star, #2 overall recruit. Mc Donald's All American. And he picked Cal.

Then he was Freshman All American, PAC-12 Freshman of the year, All -PAC-12 and PAC-12 All Academic, lead Cal in scoring in conference on a team that went undefeated at home and earned a #4 seed all while taking graduate level classes as a true freshman.

And some people have complained about him ever since.

Definitely not on the fact that two critically important upperclassmen were injured 1-2 days before the game, and Cal announcing an assistant coach's misconduct and an investigation into the head coach right before the game as well. But it was only about the coaching staff.
