Where does CAL land? Could we join the WCC for Basketball, even if Football does something else? I have no idea

As a fan, I'd be pleased if that is where we end up. We've already lost most of our usual rivals with the PAC12 breakup, and we have a history of playing most of the WCC teams, and we've had strong rivalries with some WCC teams in the past. In basketball, some of our most exciting local rivalries have been with USF, St Marys and Santa Clara, and somewhat less so with UOP. The WCC on average is not a power conference level league, but it does have a national powerhouse in Gonzaga, another excellent program in St Marys, and a good program at USF. The WCC overall is not strong enough for the NCAA to think of inviting more than 2 teams to the Dance, if that many. I would hope that whoever Cal goes with (or whoever will accept us) will let us schedule home and home or at least one game with our traditional rivals, Stanford and UCLA. Until Cal proves itself worthy again, we just aren't power conference level. Cal could also play as an independent, and give us a chance to be very creative in scheduling interesting opponents country-wide.

As I posted on the women's board, my preference would be to see us end up either in the Big Ten or in a West Coast version of the Ivy League along with Stanford and most of the other UC campuses.

I'd like to play more local teams in OOC games but I'd rather not be in a conference with them.

First, now that the Pac 12 is down to 4, how about a basketball league that starts with Gongaga, St. Mary's, Cal, Stanford, OSU WSU and SDSU -- two excellent programs, and four more that have been good in spurts, some history of success, and seem to want more.

Second, adding in USF and Santa Clara coud give us up to 16 games among 5 bay area schools that are old rivals, all within easy driving distance, and no team air travel required. Those games would be fun. And a nice contrast to what the superleagues want to do to our air: every weekend like a conference in Davos. Al Gore, call your office.

Third, same idea up north. and down south. Who could we get to round out Gonzaga, OSU and WSU. Boise St? Anyone left in the desert? Portland State?

Down south, how about UCSB to balance out SDSU? SB makes for a nice road trip and hoops venue..

Interesting question. In this evolution of college sports, do we even need to be in single conference for all of our sports? Join a football league to make money. Then join and form other leagues to provide lower cost opportunities for real student-athletes.

Many schools do this. Notre Dame is independent in football but all it's other sports are in the ACC. Hawaii football is in the MWC, but all it's other sports are in the Big West to reduce the travel burden.

I think we should look at the B1G, ACC or independence for football only but have our other sports in the UC dominated Big West, though the WCC could be another good option, especially for basketball.

I also would be in favor of continuing to play UCLA and USC as OOC games.

How about inviting the 5 UCs and Cal Poly in the Big West to join the Pac for everything but football plus San Diego State and Hawaii for everything including football?
