Really tough loss and hated the officiating at the end, but loved the energy in the building. Can't even imagine what Haas sounds like when sold-out. Hope they do more free ticket giveaways and/or food promotions. Below is a pic I took- rarely ever see the section to the side behind the basket filled with students, outside of Stanford games.

Also loved to see Cone get hot from 3 and Daws heat up after a cold start.

Whoops, didn't mean to post this both in the thread and as its own topic! Was having some wifi issues so this was a delayed post.

Do people think we have a shot at the NIT?

I will enjoy the rest of this year, but there is already a ceiling and a floor. Gonna need to re-up on the talent after this season. Madsen's charisma should help with the NIL. Then he needs to tweak what he's doing, in terms of X's and O's and player development. Some chance Tyson returns. That'd be huge.

MM will also help build fan support. Very important to make the fan experience fun again.

You can't get in to the NIT with a sub .500 record, can you? I think it will be tough to get to .500.

You can, but I think you have to be playing well by the end of the season. Think we'd have to get close to .500

The NCAA announced a revamped selection process starting with the 2017 tournament. The main highlights are:
  • Teams are no longer required to have .500 or greater overall records to receive bids.

Honestly. Best (only) shot at postseason is to win the Pac 12 tournament. I don't think that is out of the realm of possibilities given how this team is in nearly every game but will take some upsets of Utah/Arizona and some more consistent game play. And luck.

As painful as the season has been it does absolutely feel like a team that would run the table in march if they got hot and start to believe

Good turnout. I won't speak to the game. We all know what happened. Free throws. Open threes. Bleh.

Good to see the students back. They need to wear Cal gear. Not the same Cal gear. Otherwise it looks like the grandstand at Times Square by the rush tickets box office. Bunch of randos. We have to get to the point where the students that go to the overflow section behind the basket, also need to stand. We lost that over the years. We need to get all the students doing the Go clap-clap-clap Go at the beginning of every game, not just the Cal Marching Band. Anyway, I know baby steps. Hopefully because it's Saturday, there will be more people at Haas for the next game. Wazzu will be tougher, but that's why we go and support the team. Will them to victory. Go Bears!

Still no Bearettes.

They haven't been to any basketball games (men's or women's) thus far. Even though they indicated that they would be in Haas after the new year.

Madsen has shown he's a big step up from the last couple of coaches but he's got a big recruiting job ahead to build on the base he's laying down this year. Even a 10-12 game improvement over his predecessors won't be enough to clear the air fouled by the stench of the Jones and Fox regimes

Is he though? Fox won 14 games after the disaster called Wyking Jones. Madsen needs to win 8 out of the next 13/14 to reach that win total. Not an auspicious start and all the charisma in the world won't matter unless the team starts winning.

Proud attendee here at Cal's last NIT appearance which was at Haas in front of at least 1200 rabid fans. Cal State Bakersfield whipped us.
Ivan was on the bench in street clothes in order to preserve his NBA draft status, which unknown to him at that time, had already been tanked by sticking around an extra year in a rudderless program. The coaching staff drank 10 cases of Fiji water and Cuonzo caught his cab to the Oakland airport for his flight to Missouri with 4 minutes left in the game, leaving in his wake the next HC on the bench and a basketball program in ruins for years to come.

Still referencing that meaningless game as having some special meaning? Cuonzo did his radio postgame show that night (ended it with "Go Bears."). Did he do it from the taxi?

You were really at that game? You used to be in section 10, right? Because I was actually there in 10 and there weren't too many others around me. One of my buddies and a lot of empty space.

Fox was an authoritarian coach who typically got his best results his first year before the rest of the talent could flee. Fox's results got worse every year until last year we had the worst record in the country and In our history with the lowest scoring team in the country.

A better comparison at this point is Wyking Jones. Madsen is 6-12 and Jones at this point his first year was 7-11. 5-13 the second year. Essentially identical. Both recruited some very good offensive players, though Jones' players were all freshmen and sophomores and Madsen's are mostly seniors. Both want to push tempo and let the players play without micromanaging them. If Jones were the coach for some of these losses the board would go ballistic and not be so forgiving.

As I said several weeks ago, we will now see what we have with Madsen. I was relatively happy with his hiring, especially after he embraced Cal, but I am disappointed so far. He recruited a talented team, but mostly guys he knew from a lower level who will be gone next year. If he can get the team winning more games and follows up with another good class, then great. But at this point he has not proven he is much different from Wyking Jones.

Yes, I thought that NIT game had a special meaning because it bookmarked the starting point of the New Dark Age of Cal Basketball which continued from that day until they hired Madsen, who has brought the first light.

Yes, I was exaggerating about Cuonzo, he was there the whole game and post game…..but he was totally checked out of that game and mentally at his new gig in Missouri. He should not have accepted the NIT invitation. He humiliated the university and his team.

I also exaggerated about the Fiji water consumption, they only drank 6 cases.

Yes, I have tickets in Section 10, and yes, my wife and I were in attendance. I don't know the number in attendance for that game but it was embarrassing.

I have always felt bad for Ivan Rabb for being a loyal Bear and coming back a for a 2nd season. It appears the NBA scouts overrated him after his freshman year (maybe Jaylen Brown aided that) and by all accounts he was going to go high in the draft. He screwed himself playing under Coach Martin's tutelage a second year and his draft value cratered.

I'm picking the Bears today. Post a photo of the scoreboard showing Bears Win! I need a new one.

Madsen being identical to Wyking at this point is very disturbing. With the number of players finishing up this year, he needs to restock. However, talented players likely want signs of improvement and an upward trajectory before joining the program. The best scenario right now is they go on a run to end the year which translates into some talent joining the team. If that doesn't happen, I see Madsen joining the ever-lengthening list of Knowlton mistakes.
