What's the chance he returns?

Given the kind of money he could make (and that every college game risks injury), zero chance he returns. Wish it wasn't so, but there are really no strategic reasons to stay for four years anymore (I guess he would have a 5th year of eligibility because of his short freshman year?)
But perhaps someone could convince him that an extra year would greatly raise his draft position and give him the kind of experience you need to make it in the NBA. He's more Ivan Rabb than Jaylen Brown right now, and we see how that turned out for Ivan.

I have read that some guys have come back when they have been offered large NIL opportunities. I believe the Kansas Center is one guy they cited.

I haven't seen a single mock draft that lists him as a second rounder, much less a first. He's coming on strong and that could change, and of course mocks aren't the real draft (though a couple of them are usually close to accurate). He definitely should explore the draft but I'd guess he'd have to have some monster workouts to get high enough to make it a no-brainer.

A very recent mock draft on Bleacher Report lists him as a possible late first round guy. If he continues to play as he has he is certainly gone IMO.

One related aspect is that in the ACC the visibility of our potential NBA draftees might be improved. Maybe the prospect of competing in the ACC could be a plus in considering returning for one more season.

He plays for a losing team in a forgotten conference. He's going to get the attention once the post-season awards come through and amateur draft pundits start scouring stats and watching clips of him. His traits are a great fit for the modern game. The question is "is he worth a late first?"

Which leads me to this. Under the ruling that came out in November, is it possible that JT transfers out again?

For his own good, he needs to leave. There is almost no benefit to staying an extra year anymore (no matter how well you play that last year). In fact, being older in age usually works against you.

Staying might not help improve his draft position, but if he doesn't project as going in the late first round (I could see that going either way), he can stay and make a fair amount of NIL money. Do you know how much in NIL he might be able to command next year? I'm thinking a lot.

Unlikely he stays, but possible.

Perhaps in another year he would be taller in height?

Yeah, he needs to be projected as a 1st rounder for it to be a no-brainer to leave. A lot of 2nd rounders are drafted because they are willing to sign a 2 way contract. As an example, the Warriors 2nd round big man, Jackson-Davis, refused to sign a 2-way contract so he fell to the 57th pick. Luckily for him, the Dubs wanted and needed another big man, so ended up with a guaranteed contract.

So a mid 2nd rounder usually makes around 500k. Some 2nd rd contracts are guaranteed, some aren't, and some are 2 way contracts.

So I suppose if Tyson's NIL was at least equal to 500k and he thinks he can improve his draft rank to that of a 1st Rounder, it may make some sense to stay.

If it were me, however, I'd leave cause you're 1 year closer to at least playing yourself into a guaranteed contract (assuming you don't get one that first year)

At this point I don't see him as a first round pick. That could certainly change as we get nearer the PAC12 tournament. Right now today, I see him as a better than 50% he returns.

If JT wants to play college ball next year, I have trouble seeing him go elsewhere. He likes Madsen a lot, and I don't think he wants to risk playing for a coach he won't like as much. He's had too much of playing for a coach he doesn't like. Plus, the move to the ACC will make him more high profile. The only significant question is whether JT will leave to go pro.

I don't think he can transfer again, unless he graduates early. He already has transferred twice, and got the waiver when the rules only allowed one transfer without sitting a year. Now they updated the rules to allow two transfers and no sitting, so another transfer would be his 3rd. I can't imagine they'd let him transfer and waiver yet again. Based on what I'm seeing so far, he's enjoying being out there and playing for Madsen, and he's not gonna be a first rounder this go-round. Get him some NIL dollars, he stays. I'm calling it.

Yes, I think that's exactly what he's going to be assessing and will, more than likely, do what you propose. His stats are blowing up right now, compared to his previous years. While you don't make the NBA on your college stats, he is sure starting to command attention.

Thanks for clarifying that. I wasn't sure if the ruling applied to any year regardless of how many transfers before. I agree, in any scenario there is no way JT would want to have to apply for another waiver if that's the requirement.

In these discussions, people contrast the value of a first year NBA contract against the NIL proceeds of another college year. Shouldn't the contrast be between the NIL and the LAST year of an NBA career, because there will be one less year at the end? Or to be pedantic, the present value of that final contract.

Just saw that. He wasn't on their list that I saw but this was more recent. I still think it'll be about his team workouts more than anything but if he's late first or early second he should go.

That last point is important, as is one other. In the NBA draft world the longer you stay in college the more they seem to focus on your flaws vs. upside. So improving draft status has not panned out for a lot of players. Ivan Rabb is a classic example. Getting the second contract is where the big money starts to kick if you pan out as a solid NBA player, so delaying that much earning potential isn't a smart move, especially combined with injury risk. And a second rounder isn't subject to the same number of years of team control that the first rounders are so if one does well that contract could be sooner.

With that voice Tyson has, he would have been a natural as a late night DJ on KSAN No Jive 95 FM in the early 70's. He would have been spinning a ton of Chambers Brothers and Quicksilver.

Reasons for Jaylon staying for one more year:
-Competitive NIL compared to a possible 2nd Round/G League salary.
-After years of bouncing around, he's settled and looks like he's happy here.
-He likes Madsen
-He's the leader of the team, wants to be the man next year
-Experience ACC and March Madness

The NIL Era is different. Players have more control over their value. Hunter Dickinson could have been a Top 15 pick and transferred to Kansas instead. See Timme's comment below. A player like Tyson is more liable to stay than ever before.

Yeah - 2-way may have more hope, but NIL w/housing and food compared to G-league scraping buy, I can see more players developing and becoming leaders and contributors in year 4 staying in school.

Bearister, yes agree. He would have been a natural. I can visualize him with Tony Kilbert smoking weed on the air. Hilarious! KSAN was the best!
