If we can land 2 of Pope/Collins/Lawrence, then we're back in business…

Jordan Pope and Tryin Lawrence sound the most likely. Pope sounds like he wants to play in front of family and Lawrence has a great relationship with Adam Mazarei.

MBL: I like Pope but not sure why I should be excited about relatively short guards (6'2", 6'1") who can't shoot threes. Their best years are 27% and 31% from three. It is such a big part of the game now this is a big red flag to me. I'm willing to be convinced other aspects of their games make up for this weakness but I hope we have better options.

Now seeing some different stats Re Lawrence with one year at 36% on threes. This site also lists him at 6'3. He does appear to be highly rated.

How about that other Pope from UCSD?

He's a San Diego native. No relation. It'd be cool to see 2 Pope's at Cal!

Also, I believe if I'm reading it right that Pope shot 37% on threes this year. Another thing to consider, at OSU he was basically responsible for carrying the team on offense, just speculating but put in a more balanced offense that three point percentage more likely to go up.

I'd like to see Pope at the SG role or Tyson's role. He is a playmaker and drawing up open looks for him will make him have a better percentage. He has the skills to average 20 a game next year. He also will likely shoot over 40% or near that rate from three with a balanced offense as said above. He should be the biggest priority this portal szn.

Pope shot 37.1% from three and 45.1% overall last year with defenses keying on him as OSU's best scoring threat (many of the threes were off the dribble). Led the Beavers in both scoring (17.6) and assists (3.4). I have no idea how good his defense is, but I don't think three-pointers should be a red flag with Pope.

Edited to add: ah, I totally missed the "I like Pope" part that you led with. My bad. You were talking about Lawrence.

I'm gonna channel my European History and try and remember what happened the last time there were two Popes!

Both Urban V and Clement VII were popes at the same time in different places. This split papacy, known as the Western Schism, endured from 1379 to 1417.

Yeah, that schism thing! And how many times did we make March Madness during that last two-Popes period?

And, it started eleven days earlier. Or maybe there were only sixteen teams then. So confusing.

FWIW, Tyson shot 36.0% from three this year and it would be great for Cal if he came back. Pope at 37.1% is pretty good.

I do agree with TWW's general point that three point shooting needs to be a greater priority than it has been. In Fox's last year we were #350 in 3pt % and #355 in threes made. This year we improved to #191 in 3pt% and #87 in threes made.
