From JC according to his tweet.

He did not play at Baylor. He committed to Baylor out of JC in November. Injured most of his sophomore season but averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks as a freshman.

Ok, I'm sold. Hope he comes here.

At this point anyone who's breathing and 7 feet tall we have to take him, we're not going with Dort as starting center.
I can't help but feel that these players and their BS X-posts declaring their daily "Top ## lists of schools" are just toying with programs, squeezing NIL money out of schools as if they were NBA free agents shopping around.
I want athletes who see the difference between a Cal education and a Kentucky education, I don't want athletes who treat our school like a deep-pockets franchise that has to come to them on bended knee.
We can get to the tournament without selling out.

This guy took a visit to Cal and was impressed before he committed to Baylor. We can sure use a big like this!
Right now we can use any big.

Are our only bigs Dort and Curtis?

Yes, but this guy's video looks REALLY good. He'd be our best 7'er in a long time.

This is the difference between historic Cal and every other big time program. 7' is a forward. Centers are taller. But here, we call anything 6'9" and above a center. That needs to change starting right now.

The average height of a center in the NBA is 6'10.

What college team has a 7' player that is not a center?

Note the last part. Alvin Brooks, who recruited Noah Boyed, is now an assistant coach at Kentucky. Mark Pope is rebuilding the Wildcats roster from scratch, and already has a commitment from 6-10 center Amari Williams (Drexel). Apparently 6-8 forward Great Osobor (Utah State) is visiting Lexington this week, and 6-10 forward Andrew Carr (Wake Forest) is likely to visit as well.

Thinking about last year, even being short a "big man" feel like this curent roster now looks better on paper than last year's roster (assuming full health for both squads). Any thoughts on how they compare? Off paper, I feel like this current squad is going to be far more selfless so even with a slight handicap in talent, they will probably more than make up for it in heart and hustle. But if we're already ahead of the game in terms of talent, this could be an extraordinary ACC debut season. Even if we can't land that elusive "center."

Feels like all of them do, when I watch us play, or turn on ESPN. We're always the little guys. This year we look tall and ready to go tho.

Current roster is more athletic, deeper, and should have more balanced scoring and better team defense. I think the new personnel will be a much better fit for Madsen's approach, and I expect overall better consistency (which was a huge problem last year). We'll add a solid big to compete with Dort (maybe Mady Sissoko), but I'd be surprised if we added another marquee guy. I'm excited to see what this roster does in the ACC - Madsen has done a very good job assembling a really interesting team.

Great thoughts, and much appreciated. It seems like Madsen is creating a culture that may eventually flip from "Madsen hopes to land top talent," to "top talent just praying to be on Madsen's radar at all."

Mady Sissoko would be a great add and 247 crystal ball has a prediction for him to Cal. If he completes the team, I think we're NCAA bound next year.

Agree. The defense should be much improved. Tough watching how many non-defenders we had out there last year.

Potential weak spot is not having a clear go-to-guy who can manufacture a bucket at will like Tyson, or Daws in some match-ups. I can see Stojakovic being used like Crabbe where you run plays for him off-ball and let him attack closeouts.

We'll see how well Madsen can get players to buy into playing a team game on offense. If Monty had this roster it would be a tourney team.

I really hope Madsen seeks advice and counsel on coaching and in-game strategy from Monty before and throughout the season.

So dumb dumb question (RL has severely cut into my Cal obsession). Who is going to play PG? I think last years early season showed we need someone - the "everyone is a PG" NBA style isn't that effective in the college game (probably because of how highly skilled every NBA player is in, when need be, manufacturing their own shot).

Not dumb at all. Spot on, we need someone to distribute. PG Christian Tucker (UTSA portal transfer) is supposed to be that guy.

Christian had 14 assists in one game, tying for a UTSA record.

Have to think MM's plan is for Tucker to be the primary point guard, and gradually give Wilkinson some backup minutes so that if he shows the ability to play, by next year as a sophomore he will have some seasoning.

Already looking forward to the announcer's call after a dunk… Sisssssss-ooooooo-koooooooooooo!
I would vote for a 2nd big rather than a point guard, Tucker will carry us there and we have options if he's out. I'd like size and tough defense in the ACC, a focus on quickness and passing won't win us many games in that conference.
barsad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
When I look at the roster tracker now it's striking how much this transfer madness is hurting team development. 2 of our 5 starters will be gone a year from now and they haven't even set foot on campus yet! (Tucker-Sissoko). Another five players, including the rest of this year's starters (except Stojakovic) will be gone in 2026.
I'm not saying there's anything the staff could have done about it, this was the hand we were dealt. But I am saying that tournament teams need more than one (or two) years of playing together to become a resilient and winning team. This new system is killing chances at team chemistry.

It is 2024, you need elite guard play to win big in basketball.
