He's entitled to his own opinion. I agree with him

The ole "entitled to his own opinion" argument. What about being a human being?

Walton was a great player and seemingly a fine human being. Being a mediocre announcer was secondary to those

I guess you don't get it as well. There are "opinions" but Walton just died! Can you grasp that? 59 may be a buddy of yours but I have no clue who he is and it was just bad form.
Surely you can agree there.? Good lord . Note: '59s silence which speaks volumes
For the record: In addition to his manifest skills on the court, I acknowledge that Walton was, in many ways, an exemplary human being. I admired his thoughtful objection to his alma mater's decision to bolt to the BIG10. I am sorry for his passing and hope it was peaceful. But I stand by my opinion of his role as an analyst even though I'll concede many found him entertaining.

At least now it's the day after. That's the thing: When somebody dies, unless we're talking Hitler or Osama bin Ladin or somebody like that, hold off for a little bit before bringing up their flaws. Okay, maybe OJ can be grouped with the above two. So I guess evil acts vs. simply flaws is the determinant.

So I would argue that Walton was generally a good announcer in his NBA on NBC days. He was more of a straightforward analyst, perhaps even overly critical, and had that kind of entertaining Jackson-Van Gundy or Shaq-Barkley friendly rivalry thing going with Snapper Jones.

Late-period college announcer Walton was pretty much all goofiness and shtick. Your mileage may vary on whether or not it was amusing. I disliked it at first but then just gave into the silliness. It was clearly intentional on his part.

I'm with you. At some point Cal hoops needed all the help it could get. It was annoying and amusing. My point here is that 59 wants to dance on his grave and it's embarrassing as a cal fan and particularly disrespectful to a guy that loved Cal.
Time and place for everything.

While Bill's physical body died of cancer, I think Bill died of a broken heart- his beloved Pac12 conference of champions disintegrating thanks to USC's utter greed and selfishness, and college sports going in the wrong direction (in my opinion) with NIL, paid players, etc.

The trick was not to listen to his commentary, but rather to surf on it. Remember the old Beach Boy lyric, "Catch a wave and you're sittin' on top of the world."

Bill Walton was an incredible spokesman for the Conference of Champions. College basketball has lost a great one.
Yes, incredible in its literal meaning, e.g., not believable. His boosterism on behalf of the "Conference of Champions" was so patently partisan as to be dismissed as so much hot air. Walton was a great player, a sometimes insightful commentator on societal issues but, IMO, a waste of time as an analyst because of his near constant clown act. His legacy should be his stature as a a true peer of Russell, Chamberlain. and Jabbar, (he was perhaps the most versatile of that group). Unfortunately, there are whole generations who never saw that Walton and will most remember the caricature who pestered his on-air partners with myriad inanities.
Pfft!
The measure of a man is how well he played basketball? When everyone else is praising who he was AS A PERSON???

That's a very lost take. Sad.

When my cute blonde cousin was a student at UCLA Bill Walton whistled at her. There is often even considerably less than 6 degrees of separation. A long-time friend, someone I grew up with and played baseball and basketball together, played basketball at Cal the same time as Walton at UCLA. He was friends with him, and I was hoping that at some time when Walton was announcing a Cal home game I could meet him through my friend. Alas, not going to happen.

~ one of the 'archetypal' Dead cuts, CA anthem, which is not a Dylan cover; what if the Dead ever did a Townes Van Zandt number, the crowd may have melted - Dead jazz & rhythm chops said to liven' up somber poetry lyrics, & Dylan loved Townes, supposedly considered co-writing

August, 1972, Berkeley Community Theater

I think they may have played shows 3 or 4 days in a row. I was at one of them. I think they started playing around 7 pm and stopped at 11 or 11:30 pm. EPIC!
