His dad was an NBA All-star then a legend in China.

Also a PG, 6'3 Marbury II chose Cal over Princeton, scholarship offer at Fordham….

Seems quick, strong and aggressive on defense, Has been trained by his dad since age 2. A lot to like as a PWO.

I'm pretty sure I saw this mentioned in another (recruiting) thread, but it doesn't hurt to give this its own thread.

Interesting that he would turn down a D1 scholarship for a walk-on slot. His family can afford any school, but you'd think he would want the minutes vs having to fight for every appearance at Cal. But glad to have him at Cal, not bad for drawing fans to see his dad in the VIP seats.

My guess is Madsen assured him he would not be treated differently than the scholarship players and Berkeley, Madsen and the ACC was more compelling than Princeton and the Ivy League.

Marbury Sr. is HUGE in China, with shoes, an arena football team, a musical, movies about his life, statues of him in Beijing…. Did Jr live there? Does he speak Chinese? I could see Berkeley being part of the Marbury II plan to build the brand (as referenced in his tweets) and a Madsen plan to recruit and build the Cal brand in Asia as evidenced by his recent trip.

OTOH, he could really value the Cal education, the diversity of the student body, the Bay Area, etc.

His dad has lived in China for over a decade and has business interests there and so he may have lived and spent much of his youth there. Here is an article that shows a picture of him with his dad In Beijing in 2015:

Why isn't he listed on the official roster yet. I thought was announced a week or two ago.

Walk-ons cannot be discussed by Madsen or Cal until they are enrolled in school. Until then they are still a "recruitable" athlete and talking about them publicly is an NCAA violation.

The (recruiting) thread that I saw it in is not read by everyone and contains a lot of other content that can bury news like this or make reading it unstable on some platforms. I figure that once a player commits it is better to start a thread about that player so people can have discussions and find info about that player.

Isn't Armstrong a PWO? Or is he already on campus, maybe?

It is always good to get the son of a super star to come and play at Cal. Coach Madsen is doing a lot of good things.

Go Bears!

How does his talent level compare to that of the son of Julius Erving who was on the Cal roster a few years ago?

Irving was a slight 6'5 forward recruited by Wyking Jones and was a freshman his last season. He was on the team two more years under Fox until he quit the team. Rumors are Fox's practices were rough and contentious but he did not allow observers. Irving played a total of 1.3 minutes on his Cal career so as fans we will never know. Safe to assume that the forwards ahead of him (especially Bradley) were better. Fox also played at the slowest pace in the country and shortened his bench. There were no blow out wins to hand over to the reserves. We will never really know. Maybe 4th Gen has some insight?

Marbury II is an athletic, ambidextrous 6'3 PG who appears to play aggressive defense. Madsen likes to play fast. Not trying to overstate his ability, he is more an interesting story at this point, but I am pretty sure we will at least get a chance to see him play, maybe not this coming season, but the next.
