Unfortunately, this really doesn't anything new to what has already been reported. If anything, it just seems like the author browsed past posts about Jaylen on this forum and used that to write his story, without providing any citations.

He took graduate courses when he was a freshman at Cal, not after (required special permission). The "mixed reports on how good he was" regarding being a member of the Chess Club at Cal seems unnecessary. The Chess Club at Cal is high level competition. You have to be pretty good to even want to play against the other members. I wouldn't.

I also think Jake belabored the point about how bad we have been since Jaylen left in an article about why he chose Cal. He also did not give Martin any credit. Cuonzo did his research and sold Jaylen on Cal's academics and especially our history of social activism (which impressed Cuonzo as well, making him a good salesman).

Jaylen's a great role model for young kids.

it's still good to recount this story, especially now more and more people are following him. I don't see it as unfortunate at all...

Cal needs to hammer this as we join the hoops crazy ACC. All the basketball bluebloods are looking down their noses at us as we join the elite club.

Cal basketball alum NBA Champion and Championship MVP.
Cal basketball alum coach of Western Conference champs.
Cal basketball alum President of NBA D-League.
Cal basketball alum General Manager of Brooklyn Nets.

(Pay no attention to the stuff that happens after JB).

Yeah, it was a lazy article by Jake Curtis, but agree, a good story poorly told is better than it not being told at all.
