I think we'd get a lot more pledges from the hoi polloi for things like this if we used a Kickstarter type model where it was a specific goal and funds were returned if it fails.

Thats what NIL is. But doing it for $50 donations is not going to get you there. You get a thousand donors and you raise $50 grand - where does the other $950,000 come from?

If you give the collective a million - you definitely get to say who it is for.
