Wow, he had so much talent. I really liked him as a player. I think he will bring his doggedness and talent to whatever path he chooses next.

So why did he quit?

He is not "quitting". He is moving on. He write that he lost his love for the game. The pandemic showed him how fragile things can be. And with the loss of his passion, his skills diminished and he was coasting on his to that point trained abilities. He now wants to put the energy he put into basketball into other aspects of his life.

Does he have any eligibility left? He'd be a great TE.

One precedent come to mind:
1982 - Wes Howell WR

When I was a kid, Wayne Stewart played both sports for Cal, but I think quit basketball. I remember that, at 6'7", he started as a safety before switching to WR his junior year. Just thinking about a 6'7" safety boggles my mind. Stewart played TE for five years in the NFL.

I met Wes in May,1990, when I bought a car from Bob Smith Volkswagen/Porsche/Audi in Hollywood. When the salesman found out I went to Cal he told me that they had a salesman that played hoop and football at Cal, Wes Howell. He asked me if I would like to meet him and I said, "HELL YES!"

Wes came down. I told him I was a big fan of his hoop and football game. He couldn't have been more gracious. Good guy and Study Golden Bear.

Didn't Tony Gonzalez play both football and basketball while at Cal? And going even further back, I think Joe Kapp played both sports as well.

Tony Gonzalez was a rebounding machine (not surprisingly).

Yes to both, but Joe quit basketball to focus on football. (His freshman year he had a basketball scholarship.)
