Don't see another thread with 8mins left in the first half, Bears up 21-12.

Now 22-16. #22 Rathan-Mayes is a problem. 5'10, and an actual player

Mahoney for three!

The three starters are still out

Is Madden ever gonna teach the big guys to go back up after a rebound and not take it to the floor, or nah?

Apparently Mercyhurst wants to play a slower pace game so hopefully we don't have to worry about an upcoming borage of 3's. Have we gotten a full explanation of why we have three starters out still? Either way, hoping this lead keeps growing, we look better on both ends early on and I can't imagine Mercyhurst has more depth than Cal regardless of how many guys we have out

He has a very smooth stroke.

I had no idea where this school was located, upon checking they're from Erie, Penn. Their record coming in is 4-3, most of the losses were close except for the prior blow out to Air Force. They have a low 3 point shooting percentage, so giving up dunks and lay ups playing man defense is a big concern so far. Continuing from last game Mahoney is providing a spark with his 3 pt shooting.

Hopefully come out strong to start the 2nd half and Madsen can empty the bench.

Seems like Wilkinson is earning himself a starting role. I haven't watched enough, is he a liability of defense?

Madden won't, but Madsen might.

This team has some size and ability to score (which is nice to have of course)

Wilkinson can light it up

Wilkinson! Now has 25!!
Bears up 30 with 7:52 left.
Mercyhurst might deserve some mercy. When does garbage time start?

He is absolutely earning more PT at PG, and maybe at the 2

Probably depending on his defense how much PT he gets and depending on match ups

He looks to help our outside shooting which was a big concern

Has to be our best shooting night of the season, 58% from the field overall and 56% from 3.

its nice to be able to relax while watching a CAL game. it hasn't been in doubt since mid first half.

Mercyhurst might be the worst D1 basketball team I've watched (and I've watched more bad teams than I care to admit). Doesn't take away from what Cal has done tonight though, lot of guys look really good and they are taking care of business in a professional matter which is far from a guarantee in the college game on any given night

He looks very active on defense. Not sure how he will do against better players. But he's been the star with the three starters out.

He seems to be a willing defender, which is a good start, but almost every true freshman is a liability on defense.

Heck, he could end up being a great defender if he prioritizes that part of his game. See Payton II, Gary.

Agreed. His athletic ability alone should allow him to be a solid defender. He has looked good against Air Force and Mercyhurst while likely not having much practice with the starters. So maybe he has some growing pains early against better competition or maybe he just continues to look better as he gets more reps. If he has JOJ and/or Peitras beside him with Sissoki in the paint I would say he should be alright defensively. I think any dip in playing time will be more a result of Blacksher and Campbell's talent than of any potential shortcomings on Wilkinson's part

It's their first season in D1, so yeah.

Curious where this notion that Wilkinson is a shotty defender is coming from?
He is the most solid guard defensively on our team if not the most solid all around defender on our team.
I've been watching him since high school and his defense is not a weakness in any way shape or form both statistically and per the eye test.
If he has a weakness right now it is that he is still getting up to speed on his role in the high pick and roll and other off ball responsibilities he looks like he's thinking too much about his role, but part of that could be due to the fact that he is playing the 1 when he has been taking reps at the 2 so far.
As stated in my thread this summer this dude is a future lottery pick.
Met him a few times. Solid human being. Out of this world athleticism and dedicated to his craft. No doubt he'll be a top 10 pick some day.

Great insight here, especially on him taking reps at 2 vs 1. I'm very excited to see him against top competition, especially with what he's been able to do just a few games into his FRESHMAN season. Didn't know much about him before but he's quickly winning me over, kid is a hooper

If you watch his high dump offs to the wings in these past few games it is pretty clear to me that after the pass he hesitates for a split second maybe thinking about what his off ball movement should be…
It's my opinion that we are running a variation of a Jay Wright 4/1 offense and Amorrow is probably the key architect of such.
I think where the confusion arises for Wilkinson is in high dump offs to the wing from the 1 position as opposed to from the 2.
This is why Blacksher is so crucial right now. He ran this system at GCU.
Only the 1 is different in a 4 out system with the 2,3,4 essentially mirrors of each other. So when Wilkinson dumps to a wing from the 2 his role is simply to fill the empty spot using a v cut. When he dumps to a wing from the 1 his job is to fill the wing spot on the opposite side.
Granted I could be completely wrong on the offensive sets but like I said I'm pretty sure we're running a variation of Jay Wright a la Bryce Drew and from what I see on the high hand offs these 2 games where Wilkinson has been filling in for Blacksher he is having to pause a moment to think about his responsibility.
While the 4 out 1 in offense is a beautiful Swiss Army knife for a team stacked with wings and each wing is interchangeable, the responsibilities for the point are immense. In that sense I think he's filled in as best as could be expected and I'm happy he's getting run at the 1 now and not later in the schedule.

Great breakdown

I'm one who questioned Jeremiah's defense, but didn't make any conclusions saying it's probably his defense that will decide how much PT he gets (and matchups)

I haven't seen enough of him to make any judgements of his defense and in fact said I don't make any conclusions from his first several games because they were his first collegiate games

But my concern is having two undersized guards on the floor at once assuming he plays the 2

However he played mostly point the last three games so perhaps he's PG2 increasing his total PT

Prior to last several games I assumed Tucker was PG2

In any respect if he is a strong enough defender to guard a 6-4 or 6-5 guard then he might be the missing key to this team who needs the shooting. He certainly is athletic and quick enough

Just for fun, (I would have never predicted it), but I guess that title now goes to Sacramento State who lost to them by 6 at home.
