Can't seem to find any info on our big 3 injuries. Not that I've looked that hard, but are we expecting any of them back for Mizzou?

There's a chance Blacksher and Campbell will be back for Missouri. Omot will likely be a bit longer.

How'd they all get injured against USC? Very interesting to see all 3 go down at once

Would like to get Omot back, but at least Mahoney is emerging to fill the spot.

Blacksher appears to be the best passing point guard the Bears have had in years. It is a luxury to have two good guards. Over the last five years many Cal teams had no good point guards

We are close to where we can run these guys out there like hockey lines and exhaust our opponents. It can mess up the momentum a bit and you gotta ride the hot hand sometimes, as Benson says, but these last three games have made a world of difference for depth.

Might be interesting to rewatch the last half to see what might have happened.

Blacksher is the clear team leader, as a veteran presence and the best passer on the roster. He's probably the most important player on the squad (with Andrej close behind)

Wilkinson is not a Blacksher replacement. The more interesting question is if Wilkinson should start ahead of Campbell, IMO.

Campbell is a very good defensive guard. They'll need him when they go against better offensive players.

Question: What does Blakshear do better than Wilkerson?
From what I've seen so far, Blacksher has a MUCH better handle than Wilkerson. Against poor defensive teams (which is mostly what Cal has faced), it is hard to see the difference.

Against most of the ACC, I think Blackshear's advantage in this facet will be much more important and Wilkerson may even be a liability if he was getting the most minutes at the 1 spot for Cal.

I'm having trouble with the MUCH comment. Blackshear is obviously more experienced and possesses a quick shot and court vision, but I don't think the difference is that huge. Also from another perspective Wilkinson appears to be "stronger" with the ball, especially when driving. And the more minutes JW gets, he's only got to get better.

I think the MUCH comment is warranted since it has been quite a while since Cal has had someone with that strong of a handle. Blackshire is a rich man's Parris Austin.

Blackshear is more like a combination of Cobb and the best parts of Paris Austin. I think people tend to forget that Paris Austin was a somewhat limited player.

I think you missed the original question and my response. I was not saying Blackshear is a MUCH better player. To clarify, what I have witnessed (primarily due to competition) is that Blackshear seems to do much better at handling the ball against pressure defenses - which has been a significant problem for Cal teams for many seasons. Against the ACC competition, I'm guessing this will be even more important. Wilkerson may be fine, in fact may be better - but I haven't seen it yet.

I agree Wilkerson should get more minutes. He is becoming my favorite player on this team.

I don't see the comparison with Austin. Austin improved to be a very good player as a senior but his game was much different

He was a fairly weak 3 point shooter, had a good pull up and relied on his quickness and strength to finish at the hoop. Initially a weak defender but was solid as a senior

Blacksher is a very good shooter and relies on change of speed, direction with hesitation moves

I can't think of another Cal player that he reminds me of. UCLA 5-11 Tyger Campbell is my closest comparison although Tyger had a better handle and a better passer.

Yeah, hence the "rich man's" disclaimer. I was just thinking back to the last Cal player with comparable handles and how they ran the point. Blackshire appears to be a much better shooter tho.

I wonder if the Cal coaches know about VersaClimbers for optimal conditioning while minimizing injuries.

I probably did misunderstand. Again, the reality is that one player has been playing college hoops for five years while the other has just played a bit over five games. Having both is a nice luxury, and if JW appears to need some improvement, he certainly appears to have the ability to accomplish that.

How about Blacksher being a poor-man's Brevin Knight?

(no? hey, these comparisons are never perfect)

Agree their games are not similar, but it's the handles (and the height) that invites the comparisons. Austin also had a ton of change of speed/direction moves that required a high level of dribbling skill. We haven't had very many other flashy ballhandlers in this program.

Not to be an alarmist, but I wonder of COVID or some other illness played a role. If I were Madsen and it was COVID, I'd certainly follow best practices, but try to keep it quiet so I didn't get a whole lot of advice from the administration and/or COB that I didn't need.
