I agree that current defense is unacceptable but I disagree that it can't improve. Defense is made up of three components: effort, communication between players, and scheme. All three of these can be emphasized at team practices and improved during the season. Montgomery's teams weren't always good defenders right out of the gate but improved as the season progressed.

I ran into Ben Braun who said Cals defense will get better later in the season.. I hope he is right.
