It's the Mizzou game all over again… I had to step away for an hour and got a nasty surprise when I turned it back on. Still time for an offensive run, but based on that last 3-pointer from Pitt that put them up 12, we are still struggling with perimeter D.

When we went down by 3 in the second half it was time to continue the holiday break garage cleaning "fun". This is the unaccountable Cal athletics.

I know he has personal charisma but Mark Madsen's teams play with no fire and absolutely NO accountability. Think about it - up by `16 and loosing by 20+. THAT is BAD basketball.

I am absolutely not convinced we are winning a single ACC game. They are THAT bad (and the conference is that good). Sad.

Lowe killing us from deep, why don't we know how to execute a switch on defense at this point in the season? Or are we just that slow-footed?

We need some more 3 point shooters.
And yes Cal gives up way too many points. Another 90 point score.

Former Cal assistant Tim O'Toole now on Pitts staff.

Our defense is the major problem

Only 6 turnovers which is a good sign, although Pitt doesn't play aggressive defense… still good progress

Wilkerson continues to show he's a good player vs high D1 opponents

I think Stanford beats Pitt

Wake up Lyons.
You took the greatest university in the world and spray painted dog **** all over it.
Fire everyone!
I look at our student athletes and maybe like 1 percent of the football team have a declared major so the argument of academics over athletics is completely out the window.
The current admin is showing the exact same if not worse academic prowess of Barbour, Tedford, et al while simultaneously sucking 100 times worse on the court and field.
Get rid of Knowlton and Wilmoe tonight!
You can't keep doing this to your alumni and casual fans otherwise they will leave you which they have.
Tired of this *****

I'm curious what you'd do if you were Lyons and inherited this situation, and where the money would come from for anything with a price tag on it. Would you fire Knowlton who serves on the Chancellor's cabinet and has the Chancellor's ear on matters pertaining to the athletics program?

I would put Wilkinson in the starting lineup.

If Wilkinson can have a career game today and we play D maybe there's a chance. Are all the Bear Insider fans taking a holiday from watching/posting?

That has to be the move this year (I remain hopeful that the change to 2025 has financial upside of the program). It is critical (and this is Cal so it will take 3x as long as it should) to have an AD in place to evaluate Wilcox next year. You do NOT want to have a new AD (and we know we need a new AD) to come in After the start of football season.

You really gonna put this lead reduction on Madsen? Really? I think you're a bit obsessed.
Econ only has one song.

Was my song incorrect?

I knew early on Madsen was a bad decision because there was no due process. Just take whoever Monty, a coach who couldn't get us to Braun's level of success in the tournament, wanted. Bad decision. Then he loses, this year and last, to teams with much less talent.... I mean losing to Cornell at home...should have been fired on the spot especially after similar losses last year.

I can assure you we will get nowhere with Madsen. Question is how many years will it take for Cal AD to figure it out. Before he does, my bet is that Madsen will be given an extension.

Montgomery was not part of the advisors that were with Knowlton that made the decision to hire Madsen. But that doesn't fit your song now, does it?

Not even close. Monty stayed out of it.

What?? This is just not true. Monty was absolutely involved. Econ is correct about him talking to JK about who to offer. Whether you choose to believe this was the right or wrong decision is up to you- not relevant. But you are completely incorrect in saying Monty was not involved, Alki.

back on topic, it appears to my untrained eye, Madsen's in game coaching may be the issue. He appears to not make effective adjustments as game goes on - hence the failure to hold leads

definitely something worth keeping an eye on, though i remain confident that as a young coach he will continue to learn & grow. I think the most effective thing to do in the near-term would be to hire onto staff a top-tier strategist (xs/os guy). I think we have a strong enough recruiting staff. A top notch in-game coaching advisor would be helpful. in this regard, the guy doesn't have to be young / charismatic, into recruiting, etc. can be an old grumpy guy for all I care. maybe even get Monty! but someone who is a strategic wizard.

I had no real issue with Madsen being hired. He had a good run at a smaller program, and for a program like Cal you basically have to take a chance on a guy like that because you don't have the money or the pedigree to hire a successful major-conference head coach. Being a "name" with NBA cred and an enthusiastic personality is a plus for him too.

But so far, it doesn't look to me like he can consistently field a team that plays cohesively as a unit. Too much individual freelancing. Some will say that last year that improved later in the year. Okay, maybe, but if it's going to take this long every season then you're never making the postseason. It needs to happen faster.

I'd like to see Cal start to have a good run at home at least. A road game in a hostile environment 3,000 miles from home shouldn't be the basis for writing a coach off IMO. Last year's team was pretty spunky and fun to watch.

Our alleged depth faded fast. Blackshear is a recruiting bust and must be taken out of the starting rotation, Injuries to BJ and JOJ took away from our rotation must needed athletic and lengthy defenders. Andrej and Jeremiah are keepers but incapable of carrying the team against ACC opponents. Sissoko and Dort are adequate but not great. It is going to be a very long ACC season. Madsen and his staff have two well regarded guards scholastically recruited for next season who hopefully can provide some much needed shooting from the perimeter. Now, we need to go into the portal for a stud with size and athleticism to be a rim protector and a reliable scorer in the paint..

I still believe the kicker was the right hire as it had the backing of very wealthy alumni. We get the practice facility built and likely an 8 figure nil budget. I leave it to Greg/sb if they would like to share If Goldman has given to the hoops program this decade.

I forgot there was a game today until I did my afternoon-perusing of this board. Oops. But that says something about the excitement level created by this current team. One could argue that it says more about me as a fan, except for the fact that I have almost always known when our next game is (and watched it, if at all possible), going back 40+ years.

I have zero idea when our next game is. I could find out in less time than it takes to write this sentence, but I think I'll wait.

EDIT: Okay, then I got curious. Our next game is this Saturday, at Clemson, 5:30. Maybe I watch, maybe I don't.

UCSB is 8-5, not all that impressive with their schedule.

Yup. I can easily figure out when our next game is, but I lack the motivation to do even that.

Long-time season ticket holder though; I'll drag myself out there. Right now, I'd kinda like to see us stop letting opponents score in the 80s and 90s on us.

I understand your conclusion. But for it to be valid you need to supply some specific issues/strategies. (And I contend that your statement - conclusion without specifics, is consistent with the others I read on this forum.)

He is slow to call time out when we are getting abused by a particular set play. teams were KILLING us on the high pick and roll repeatedly in the early part of the season and there was NO adjustment with a quick TO to help explain/remind the players how we wanted to defend that. Particularly thinking about the Mizzu game when their PG would take that high screen and the his man who came over high on his back hip and then essentially reverse posted him to a 6 foot jumper.

If money is the only consideration then we should have made Goldman our new chancellor.
