Wake Forest at Home.

BUT, I wouldn't depend on a W at Furd.

I do not see 6 additional wins w/this group...They tend to play "uphill" most of the game. Too hard to reverse negative momentum. This group shoots poorly and does not defend w/any ferocity...

I know I'll get more heat from the band apologists, but last game it was one band and zero cheerleaders, today's game it's zero band and 5 (count 'em, 5) cheerleaders. What's the excuse this time? Big Game? Bowl Games? Previous engagements? Outlook calendar got screwed up? School starts Tuesday, not buying that one either.
Pathetic show of non-spirit by organizations with the sole mission of supporting athletics.
If they can't get excited enough to show up, why should alums and other fans?

No excuse for the Straw Hat Band not to be able to come up with 25 or so people to play at the game. Poor showing.

The first half was so bad that I told the people around me that I wouldn't call them out for goofing around on their phones during play. I even pulled out mine. But then the last 15 minutes or so were kinda fun!

Here's my takeaways from the game and what Maddog needs to do to improve.

- Jovan Blacksher is better off as a bench player or 6th man - coming off the bench and giving them a spark. Maybe him coming off the bench will help him make some 3's and be productive.
- Rytis also is better of coming off the bench and providing a spark - we saw that early on this year
- Madsen needs to create set plays to get andrej going in the first half - he's been too cold in the 1st half
- We need to be able to let our big men go to work down low instead of dribbling at the 3 point line for a long time
- Wilkinson needs to start and so does JOJ, we saw what they could do in the 2nd half (way more productive team on the court)

Here's my starting 5

Wilkinson, Stojakovic, JOJ, Campbell, Sissoko

Rytis and Blacksher are the first off the bench with Mahoney and Dort seeing reserve minutes

Gotta admit I was one of those who gave up. Seemed a logical thing to do when you see a half like Cal played. As someone said, no offense or defense. Doesn't leave much else.
But the stats as posted here seem truly bizarre.
19 more field goal attempts.
6 more made free throws.
5 more steals.
11 fewer turnovers.

And lost.
Except you left one stat out:

Game FG%: VT 57.1%, Cal 32.4%

Can we get to 14 wins considering the remaining 15 games below? We're 8-8 and need to find 6 more Ws, so I've put down my "must wins" if we're going to get there. Will 14 wins make anyone happy? Probably not, but the bar is set there because it's better than last year's win total.
Projected Ws: Miami, Syracuse, Ga Tech, Stanford, BC, Notre Dame.

Cal might pick up a win here and there when a team has the occasionally bad shooting night. That happens time-to-time like it did with Virginia. If a few of those happen, then maybe Madsen hits 14+ wins. Progress, baby, progress! LOL!

Great post with which I can find no fault!

Blacksher needs to be benched until he get healthy. Not only is he offensively challenged, he is a liability on defense being undersized and having diminished quickness.

There definitely was a lot of angst courtside last night (Gen4 and I were absolutely stunned and miserable witnessing the sh*t show) as the disaster unfolded on the court. Cal was the better team but got hosed so badly in the first half that it could never recover. Yes, the last minute rally was a positive, but it ended with a 9-0 collapse. Why is Madsen not playing in the first half Jeremiah and JOJ more as starters, while keeping Blacksher and Rytis in reserve roles? IMO, we have a coaching problem, in that nothing is being learned by Markand his staff from their past mistakes (we historically have started slowly and poorly, so change things to make a difference, right?). Mark has to change his losing ways with more creative and effective player rotations, with an offensive scheme that features more motion and screens and less hero ball which features Blacksher dribbling around aimlessly to nowhere good, and also needs defensive schemes that cut off drives to the hoop by our opponents for easy buckets,

We will be lucky to reach last year's 13 wins. If we do not do so, then we have a MBB program on the decline under Mark. That scenario will adversely effect our recruiting new talent and to retaining current talent (hopefully inclusive of Andrej, Jeremiah, OJ and BJ).

Exactly right. This is why it's not a "who cares" answer to my question about how to get to 14 wins. It may only be a psychological bar that doesn't mean much in actual improvement metrics, but in the NIL merry-go-round era of players checking their feeds the day after playing their last game of the season to see which teams are "going up" and which teams are "on the way down", it's crucial for the long-term prospects of Cal basketball that we are seen as being on the up side of that divide.
Johnfox as usual had great insights, esp on the Blacksher debacle. If I see him starting again on Wed. I'm likely to throw something at the TV!

It was bizarre. The TV announcers were saying it was smart of Cal to save time and not touch the ball even as the clock is running. And not one player, coach, or ref noticed? How does that happen?

Add that using the high pick and roll must include actually passing to the roll when he cuts to the basket. That man has been open in the middle time after time and the guard never delivers they just dribble from the screen or pass around the arc.

If last year's coach was so good at running the PnR, we should hire him!

How much of a risk is Andrej for the draft? FWIW I don't think he's ready and his Dad probably agrees, but he's averaging the 2nd most points in the ACC.

I do think Jeremiah is much more likely to leave (portal) however. Retaining him will be important
barsad

Andrej's not ready, and I doubt he'll ever play in the NBA. Jaylon is still barely getting off the bench at 7 minutes a game with the Cavs, and Andrej thinks he'll do better? Best to prove he can work with an offense that has more than one scorer, one more year and his prospects could rise.

Even if wilkinson leaves, we got a recruit who is better than him.

There's a way to potentially fix this and also maybe save this season (which I had high hopes for, but is fading)...Wilkinson needs to start and play about 30 minutes per game. I don't care who sits, probably Blacksher who is out of eligibility after the season anyway, but it's time to make the switch. Wilkinson can develop his skills, get valuable PT, and continue to improve. He's not gonna play *more* elsewhere. And if they close with some wins, he might see enough to stick around. Make him feel like he's the star (along with Andrej), and then NIL the sh*t out of him next year. It's a lot more work to break in with another team if the situation is good here. Those two can be the base around which Madsen can build something. That's the sell.

Agree Wilkerson should get more minutes with Blacksure probably getting less, and I think that's happening already, with the exception of starting and when we need Blacksures experience, or when Wilkerson gets in foul trouble

Honestly, in our position you cannot be thinking that way. We need as many good players are we can get. I don't care who's coming in, losing JW would be a disaster.
