Wilkinson is the second coming of Jerome Randle with those drives.

He's our guy so I will take it, but each time they replay it the travel looks more pronounced.

It's coming together… Mady rebounds good, but I credit stellar 3-pt shooting by Blacksher, JW and JOJ for saving our a#sses

Took care of business down the stretch. The ball was moving, the rebounding was on point and the defense intensity was up.

I was wondering how these guys went from ACC Tourney Champs and the Final Four to what we saw tonight:

Sissoko scored 6 points but absolutely dominated the game.

This is why it's so important to have a shot blocker. A shot blocker can change the entire look of your defense.

Yeah, they looked pretty weak. Especially their starting center #34, the backup #33 played much better but didn't get many minutes. OTOH Sissoko looked great and Dort looked good.

Attendance was terrible, much less than the women's games last week.

Back from the Haas. Yeah, really low attendance. Multiple factors, I guess, but what a shame.

NC State didn't look so good, but a win is a win is a win. How many games has ex-Furdie Michael O'Connell played against Cal? Maybe 8-10? And he's lost most of them. Too bad for him, eh?

New Forum rule, look it up first, then post.
Women's games
1/30 UNC - 2,888
2/3 Pitt - 2,733

Tonight's men's game vs NC State - 3,139, 16% off the average of 3,742, to be expected for an 8 pm game on a Wed night.

Yes, overall 3,742 average is bad, but not as bad as the women (surprising given how good they are this year).
Cal's opponents got 9,319 avg. to show how far off the norm we are. It's a long way back, but we'll get there.
But seriously, look it up, then post.

If we had just kept Harmon, our attendance would probably be close to a sellout every game (I know I'd go to more games). I know we had to expand during the Kidd era, but man, it'd be nice to have Harmon right now. It'd be perfect size.

Nice to see the following.
Outrebound an opponent, 38 to 30.
Have more assists, 16 to 5.
Andrej having the opportunity to play himself back into shape when the team wasn't reliant on him as a scorer/penetrator.

Love to see this team pick up wins against Georgia Tech, Boston College, Notre Dame, can they squeeze out an upset performance elsewhere among the remaining games?

One of the things that amazes me is how well he runs the floor and the fact that he plays/runs so hard but has great cardio. Dort has many of the same traits with a little less polish/size.

That's tickets sold, right? If so, very high likelihood that a midweek, late start against a weak opponent, especially after recent struggles, would keep butts at home vs the surging women's team. If these are paid vs turnstile numbers, I'd bet the women did better than the men.

Either way, last night the team looked like a competently coached team with decent talent. We know talent has been a huge issue. Maybe Madsen isn't the greatest coach, but if we can fund his recruits and he can continue to recruit increasingly talented athletes, we just might be good.

I'm sorry we only have Sissoko for one year. His leadership, effort, and smart play (ok, I think he got badly fooled on a shot-fake last night) make a huge difference. Literally as I write this, it hit me who he reminds me of: only long-time Warriors fans will remember Clifford Ray, but that's the guy.

For those of you who know the rules changes better than me, has the definition of a moving screen changed lately. I ask for I see center and power forward players leading players down the key from the top to the bucket screening out the defensive players. Not only do they move with the defenders but they move left and right to assist the player driving the lane. Back in the day, such was not allowed and considered and offensive foul. I am seeing this everywhere now as I watch tons of Big East hoop along with ACC. Either a rules change or maybe instruction to referees, but sure has changed. And yes this starts out at the three point line with the offensive pair moving in tandem.

BearsandGiants,

Just wondering, have you coached college basketball or even high school basketball before? Have you played at the college level? I'm asking because on a night Cal played "competently" you found a reason to be negative and criticize Madsen instead of acknowledging that the play of the men's basketball team has improved over the 2nd half of the season. They even found a way to win a few games without their leading scorer in Stojakovic and one game without him and Maddy. They also won last night when Stojakovic went 2 for 12 in his first game back. I doubt they would have won those games earlier in the season.

If you are or have been a professional coach, forgive me for my comments. But if you are not an experience coach or player, why don't you find a way to be positive rather than just another angry Cal fan who is bitter about the years under WK & Fox. One thing I do respect about Madsen is he will acknowledge his coaching mistakes and never blames his players. That's a far cry from Fox who regularly called out players even though he rarely gave interviews to reporters and got hostile if reporters asked tough questions.

Is Madsen perfect, not likely, but he is a breath of fresh air compared to his predecessors and we have reason to be hopeful for the future of men's basketball at Cal. Everyone has a right to their opinions and this board is for Bear fans to share their viewpoints. Just a little tired of the negativity of Cal fans when unlike the football team, we have a coach who is actually improving the program.

Go Bears!

I was at all three games I mentioned and the two women's games had way more people. A friend who was there with me agrees. To my eye the published women's attendance figures were reasonably close, though I thought the North Carolina game drew noticeably more than the Pitt game. The men's NC State game attendance looked much smaller, I have no idea where those numbers came from.

If anyone else attended those three games please chime in.

Yeah, no way were there 3,139 butts in the seats last night against NC State. I'd say there were no more than 2,000 actually in attendance.

Agree. They were probably counting "tickets sold", not butts in seats. Anyway, very sparse attendance last night.

I think there were more than 2,000. Admittedly, my method was crude, and my counting was spread out over the course of stoppages in play, but I counted 2,084 butts in the seats last night, and it is much more likely I undercounted than overcounted. But the undercount wasn't too high. You are right that there is no way there were 3,139 butts in the seats.

Impressive that you count every person

I sometimes estimate numbers by counting by row

For each row I estimate 1/4,1/2, 3/4, or full

Every time I do this, I wonder why 3-5 Rally Committee members sit high up on the platform behind the banner. Shouldn't they be in the student section or at least somewhere they can help "rally'
