It seems that most of the teams we play have a smaller roster than we do. I am basing this on the rosters I pickup at our home games. It seems to apply to the women's games too. Is that because the other teams don't bring their full roster for away games, or we just have more players than other teams?

Sonomaman,

I don't know how many players teams are allowed to take on the road, but I do know that the women's team can give out 15 scholarships while the men's team can only has 13 scholarships to give to players.

According to NCAA rules, teams are allowed to suit up 15 players for a game. So for the women that likely means that all scholarship players travel. I haven't paid attention to how many players Cal takes on the road, but it would make sense that two of the walkons are allowed to suit up and travel. Not sure if that is accurate in terms of travel or not, but I do know that 15 can suit up for a game and sit on the bench.

I know the Men's roster has 21 players listed and that's because Madsen said he wanted a lot of walkons to help with practices and to rotate players in to keep the scholarship guys working hard.

Go Bears!

Duke is going to be a problem in terms of height for us.

Their PG Sion James is 6'6
Their SG Tyrese Proctor is 6'6
Their SF Kon Kneuppel is 6'7
Cooper Flagg is 6'9
Maluach is 7'2

Whereas we have a 5'10 PG, 6'0 SG, 6'7 SF, 6'7 PF and 6'8 C

Duke is going to be a problem in terms of just about everything.

I have never seen a Call MBB roster even nearly this big. Not saying it's bad necessarily, but unheard of (to me, at least). Madsen says it is to have more players to practice with? Really? How does that work?

Your right JohnFox,

I don't think it's going to be pretty. We've struggled with bigger players all season long. And let's face it, Cooper Flagg is projected to be the first player picked in this year's NBA draft and he's only a freshman.

1. We can't play like we're intimidated.
2. We get hot from outside.
3. They get cold from outside.

I believe in miracles (but I don't bet on them).

Go Bears!!!

3 star - talent but undersized

4 star - big talent but undersized to average, and athletic

5 star - elite or big talent and tall and athletic or elite athlete

Duke's starting 5/6 are all 5 stars and they are playing at home after an upset loss

We need to give them our best shot

yes, need our A game and Duke gets in foul trouble. If that happens we have a chance!

I am hoping we keep it within 30 and they enjoy their trip to Cameron and that we sneak a win in Atlanta against G. Tech.

We also need to shoot the ball really well - that means we can't miss so many open 3's

Ideally, we should target making 12-16 3's as a team if we want to win. It's going to be hard driving into the paint and you can probably tell that Duke is going to force us to shoot it. Get hot, then we run our comfortable offense.

It will also be key to getting Maluach in foul trouble

Before this season I thought the silver lining to getting pasted by the ACC elite was that we would at least see future NBA stars hoop it up at Haas.
All we had to do to see Cooper Flagg was to wait for the 25-26 season… so much for that.
I have to admit that watching Final Four-worthy teams has kind of harshed my Cal fan mellow. When I see Alabama drop 100 points on Texas, it's painfully obvious how far this team has to go to get to the tournament. There is no, "we're one good center away," or "if we shoot 5 percentage points better we'd be 20-3." Madsen needs a full reset in 25-26, maybe keeping only JW (that's right, Andrej's not on that list as long as he stays in turtle mode).

I agree about Andrej. I'd love to have him back but I think our recruiting priorities for the offseason are 1) retaining JW 2) replacing Sissoko 3) adding shooters then 4) retaining Andrej

As for shooters, I feel like every team we played in non-con had at least one 6'4 fundamentally sound combo guard that could shoot the 3. We need 2 of those guys---basically Theo clones. DJ is close but can't shoot.

It will be super depressing if we have to start over again.

Just don't put in Gus in garbage time when Cooper Flagg is in there. We wouldn't want him to get PTSD from that Caleb Love dunk on him. May have been the nastiest one I've seen live.

That was violent and upsetting. Didn't he get called for a foul too? Just glad it didn't go viral. haha

Tracked it down, forgot about that one.
