Vanderveer was a great coach. But you can't be tough love with every player in this era, because if you lose them, you literally may lose them to another team. It's a much tougher job, because you have to figure out what each player needs from you mentally, and provide that, even if what they need is hard for you to do. That's why so many of the old-time coaches have retired in the last few years.

And here I thought it was forbidden to say anything critical of "Saint Tara".

Shouldn't this thread ACTUALLY be moved to the women's basketball page?

There's tough love and there is not acknowledging a player at all. This seems extreme as hell

There's a famous story about Willie Mays coming up to the NY Giants as a 20 year-old in 1951. The Giants manager was Leo Durocher, with a well-earned reputation as a tough SOB. Durocher saw that Willie had a fragile ego at that age and, although he started out batting 1 for 20 and begged to be sent back to the minors, Leo said, "You're my centerfielder". Willie won the Rookie of the Year award and you all know the rest. Moral of the story: take the time to know your players.

To put it mildly, Stanford's not having a good day for news stories about their coaches.

And breaking news: Bill Walsh is still dead!

But I hear Elizabeth Holmes is working on a solution for that . . .
