I think he's already been a replacement. But if I remember my history right, for Garfield not Fillmore.
Fillmore, from the moment he arrived, was only concerned about the size of his bag. Plus, low hoops IQ.

Litwack didn't mention Garfield; my recollection is he was shot and he went septic when docs did not handle infection....was a Civil War hero
