Shaq as GM is a bit of an outlier, as I think he'll just be a figurehead. He's part of a pattern by Sac State to attract as much media attention as possible with their hires in hopes of getting a MWC or Pac-12 invite in the future.
There has been a recent trend of programs adding a GM with real oversight, in addition to a current player/alumnus who acts as Assistant GM (who contributes to NIL and presumably helps bring in donors). In addition to Curry at Davidson, Trae Young took on an Assistant GM role at Oklahoma (and donated $1 million to their NIL funds) and Terrence Mann took on that role at Florida State.
Hoping Cal adds a GM and Assistant GM like other programs are doing soon.
Jaylen Brown is the obvious choice for that Assistant GM role...and Shareef is probably the best case scenario for the actual GM. I think adding those two would significantly improve our NIL/depleted roster situation.
