Sammie Yeanay Transfers To Cal

BERKELEY – Sammie Yeanay has signed to play for the California men’s basketball program in the 2025-26 season. Yeanay, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward from Gainesville, Florida, spent his freshman season at Grand Canyon in 2024-25.

Yeanay was a consensus top-100 high school prospect out of AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Arizona, before signing with Grand Canyon. He played five games for the Antelopes between Nov. 4-Dec. 19 before missing the remainder of 2024-25 with an injury.

“Sammie plays the game with an electricity that Cal fans are going to love and respect,” Cal head coach Mark Madsen said. “His physicality and relentlessness will create mismatches for us and he’s just scratching the surface of how versatile he can be on both ends of the court. Sammie rebounds and passes at a high level, defends multiple positions with his strong frame and can attack the rim by getting downhill in a hurry. It’s great to have Sammie as a Golden Bear.”

Yeanay averaged 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.4 minutes played per game in his limited action with the Lopes. He tallied season highs of 11 points and four rebounds in a win over LIFE Pacific on Dec. 7.

Yeanay led AZ Compass to a No. 8 national finish in ESPN’s prep rankings as a senior in 2023-24. He previously played for The Rock School in Gainesville, winning a state championship as a sophomore in 2022. He scored 38 points and grabbed 16 rebounds on the way to being named the championship game MVP.

Yeanay was born to Liberian parents and grew up in North Dakota.

I think it's "Go [your team name here] for now" for most teams nowadays, sadly…

Two-months ago news, wonder why it took so long to make it official.

My guess is that it only recently became official when he "signed".

Yes, until he signs or is enrolled in class he is still a "recruitable athlete" and by NCAA rules Madsen/Cal cannot discuss him publicly.

What does it mean that Madsen/Cal can't discuss him publicly? Does it mean that they cannot do so until a recruit is officially signed?

It seems kind of unfair if the school and the coach of the school that a recruit is "committed to" (but not yet signed) cannot make any public comments, all the while the recruit is still open to being poached by other schools. If this is the case, then a "commitment" really has almost no meaning.

I just hope the players we recruit will be high character people who would honor their word.

Only one word matters. $

Agreed, but there still needs to be some rules to make it a fair system…

Can a school rescind an offer made to a player before he signs just because the school wants to offer a different player instead?
