"Armchair Expert" podcast confessional.
No wonder Kobe had no respect for him. I certainly don't.

Quote:

(Shaq revealed) that he "had to be on pain pills to play" during his 19-year career.

The former Los Angeles Lakers center said he was using "homeboy math" when it came to his dosage.

"If it said take one, I'm taking three… I had to have them, so is that addiction?" he questioned, admitting he "didn't know" he was addicted at the time.

"Is addicting for the chemical effect or are you just taking it? Because I was having a heated discussion with my doctors like, 'You were addicted.' But I didn't feel high," O'Neal continued. "I don't think I was suffering mentally. I think if I had a knack, I would take it [because] I don't want to feel that knack because we need this game."

According to the Hall of Famer, his addiction wasn't exactly a secret. "It's not that I was hiding it," he said. "The trainers knew. I mean, I'm not telling my wife or my kids or my boys"

After a self-imposed "lifetime ban" from clubbing, O'Neal allows himself one vice: Hookah.

"I've never been into weed," he said. "[Hookah] enables me to follow the routine of sit your ass down. When I was young and dumb and I lost my family I lost my family by doing too much, being out, being in too many places. But now I don't go to clubs, I don't go to gentleman's clubs.

Saw him at times this year and he didn't seem all that healthy. Hate to say it because he seems like a good guy, but I'd be surprised if he was still around in ten years. Please let me be wrong. Good thing for Shaq: I often am.

Agreed, I don't think his health is all that great. Best wishes to him going forward. Thought that his analysis during the NBA playoffs was damn good.

The guy showed up out of shape before every season, so was pretty clear that he was out "having a good time" when he wasn't playing ball.

Obviously he always played himself into shape and was still a great player, but you have to wonder if he could have been even greater if he'd been more serious about it. Some guys just don't have that personality, though.

Think how many NBA players today are still doing this. Then multiply that number by 10 or 20 to get the number of NFL players in the same boat.

or perhaps he had such knee/hip pain that he rested in the offseason. His big body took a lot of pounding up and down the court.

Met him once in Houston restaurant one summer. He was with his family, so asked for privacy, but would say hello to some tables as he left. I asked my waiter to inquire if I could get an autograph for my son, [name]. Waiter came back and said, sorry, he's not signing anything tonite. Ok, no problem. Later that evening, as Shaq was walking out passing the tables, he stopped by our table, and handed me that night's menu, "I think you dropped this." Scribbled on the menu, was, 'say hi to [name],' and signed with his full name and number. He looked at me, gave a big grin, deep guffaw, and said 'thanks for respecting my family's privacy. '

Class act.

Came across this short video... clip with Shaq explaining why Mark Madsen was the purest guy in the NBA and how he had to protect that.
