The Monty effect. He was the master at maximizing his best players

Reminiscing about the likes of Randle and Crabbe took me back to the era when Cal had 3 conference PoY's in 4 years (Randle, Jorge and Crabbe).

I didn't realize how lucky we had it back then. My freshman year was '09/10 when we won the Pac-10. I only knew a solid program until the Wyking hire...

Hopefully we'll get back to that perennial bubble team-level in the near future.

Ryan Anderson was the best at carrying it over to the NBA. He'd get my vote as best pure shooter by virtue of proving it on a bigger stage.

Here are some surprising numbers for former Cal players 3-point shooting in the NBA:

Best career percentage:

Allen Crabbe 0.387
Ryan Anderson 0.380
Lamond Murray 0.360
Jaylen Brown 0.359
Jason Kidd 0.349
Kevin Johnson 0.305

Best single full season percentage:

Allen Crabbe 0.444 (2017)
Kevin Johnson 0.441 (1997)
Jason Kidd 0.425 (2010)
Lamond Murray 0.424 (2002)
Ryan Anderson 0.403 (2017)
Jaylen Brown 0.395 (2018)

And lest we forget, there was Jabari Bird, who played one NBA season, 2018, with 17 attempts, shooting 0.429. What followed was tragic for all concerned.

Seems like Jason Kidd's 3 point percentage might be a little higher but for his willingness to always try the long court heave at the end of a period. Same with Steph Curry, who, regardless, has shot 42.3% for his career from three and best full season at 45.4%.

I've told this apocryphal tale before about that five overtime game - because I did not witness it but it was talked about a lot at the radio station. KALX was broadcasting the game, which meant the DJ whose shift it was just sat at the board listening and being ready in case the feed got lost or for when the game ended. The late shift was 10pm to 2 am and the DJ for that shift came into the studio (then up at Lawrence Hall of Science) and a little upset that the game was still going on. and on. and on. and as the fourth overtime was winding down, he'd had enough and cut the feed as a shot was going up and said into the microphone "you'll never know" and then went and did his show.

Love KALX and love this story, thanks for sharing it again. Was sitting behind the north side basket for the House game. It was insanity.
