I'm really looking forward to K State a week from now… if they continue to improve and can still pull out a win on the road, we'll know we have something here.
The main thing I like about this team is the teamwork and defensive toughness (props to Dorsey)… on those two counts, this is Madsen's best team so far.

It's early and neither Wright St nor CSUB are really expected to be comparable to ACC teams, so these last two games may not provide much prognostication value. That said, I am glad to see Cal beating teams it should beat, which has not always been the case. These two teams have provided Cal some live action to see where it needs to improve (e.g., turnovers, threes) and what it's doing well (e.g., ball movement, team defense).

That said, I'm enjoying watching this team and am looking forward to seeing what Madsen can do with the players. I have little doubt he can coach them up and am really excited at the prospect of watching Cal return to developing its players.

I actually had security check my ticket at one point and redirect me away, slightly shocked they cared with such a small crowd

Good win by the men!

I'm sure the practice is a holdover from the Knowlton regime. Why miss an opportunity to piss off one of the few fans who actually attend a Cal basketball game?

As a lesson of how things should be done, I give you Cal's final football game of the regular 2015 season against ASU. It was a night game, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, cold (below 50deg) and windy, and attendance was predictably very low, especially in the student section. Just before kickoff, they announced over the PA that anybody who wanted to move over into the student section could do so. We did, along with many others, and had a great time as Cal won on a last second FG to qualify for some minor bowl game. It was also Goff's final game at CMS.

That's how you build fan loyalty.

We moved into chairbacks and the same guy was eyeballing us and directing others out of the section. Pretty pathetic. God forbid we let people move into empty rows and make our TV arena shots slightly less embarrassing.

I didn't notice either; was chatting the whole game with two guys six feet away from me... and I don't even hear that well! When the dance team was on the floor, the music seemed at an appropriate level. Maybe it depends on where you're sitting (speaker location, etc.).

Most of the time the sound level was OK for me but I did have to cover my ears for a few minutes during one dance episode. A few years ago it was much worse.

Well Big C said the same thing. Maybe it fine for us because we don't have hearing aids and don't need them. I understand they can heighten music impact significantly.

In contrast, the last few Warriors games I've been to have been deafening.

~2,100 attendance sounds about right for last night.it was definitely a smaller crowd than n Monday, which was still pretty small.

I've noticed that over the last 4 years, I've had serious problems with loud noises. Went to go see Superman in the theaters and thought my ears were going to explode. Perhaps Covid has caused some to be more sensitive to sound. Whenever you're unsure about anything and need a scapegoat, Covid is there to take the blame.

I blew out my ears in my late teens and early twenties, 50 years before COVID-19. But COVID-19 is definitely the cause of all of my other issues.

Perhaps the empty Haas made the sound more pronounced without the baffling effect when a decent crowd is present.

After the midway point of the first half, all empty chairback seats should be welcoming to those who want to improve their view and enjoyment of the game, as a thank you for any loyal soul who is attending games against the lineup of weak opponents who are not exactly prominent teams that draw a crowd.

Sounds like about a 2X inflation of the actual… I hope more people come back after we put together some long win streaks.
I hate so many non-basketball things about the Haas experience - that is something the Athletics dept could really look at and improve by fixing little things, like:
- Food: It's horrible. On opening night I paid 17 bucks for a questionable hot dog and a CAN (fountain not working) of soda.
- Sound system. I agree, no need to blast it, we can hear it at 70% of where they have it now (it's not the hearing aids, gas lighters). You ought to be able to have a conversation with the person next to you.
- Yellow jackets. I'm sure they're good, hard-working people, but I hate the way they are trained…. trained to basically hassle good fans over total non-issues like where you sit in a 90% empty arena. They often hassle me about going out on the steps to take in the baseball field and city view, one small pleasure that I've been doing for 20 years. We do not need yellow jackets to outnumber fans in halls, why do they have one every 20 feet?
- The bag check. Tried it once, totally incompetent, never been back.
- Students working renewals just have other things on their minds. My renewal didn't go through even after I told them to re-up. I had to proactively ask, should be tbe other way around.
Sure, this could be just a lot of old dude complaints… or it could be the essence of why the program fell apart. Athletics just doesn't care about the fine points of an enjoyable fan experience. They've lost touch.

I usually try to stay away from these "piped in music" threads, cause I honestly don't notice any of these things when I'm focused on the game.

But I will say the ratio of yellow jacket people to fans does seem way off. Just don't see how we can be making any money when the yellow coats seem to outnumber us.

On TV it looked way less than that. If you told me it was 1,000 I would've thought that was high.

It's not hard to do a rough count … my approach is I count 10 people…. For example:

7 in a row + 6 in next row is 10+3

Next row has 5 = 10+8

Next row has 15 = 30+3

Etc

You could also just count as 33 if easier for you but because it's a rough count I don't try to be as exact as that …. Mostly just count 10s and know that there are a few extra or close to another set of 10

You don't have to count every single person, just do a rough count

You can count half the stadium and then extrapolate …. Do special areas like student section separately

Don't do this at beginning of game or halftime

Best is when there is a TV timeout

If you think this is crazy I once won a speed contest using this approach, and won count the jelly beans in a jar multiple times with a similar approach.

Ice cream update. Scoreboard shows puctures of ben and jerrys message says" buy one and fortify yourself the second half " they have none for sale. An email to cal dining a response that says " a ticket been crested. After one week no response. Plenty of beer for $14 , though.

Correct, you telling people with hearing aids that it is actually their equipment that is distorting their perception is literally the definition of gas lighting. It has nothing to do with "differing opinions", it's about respecting others' perceptions, not blaming them.
I have an app that measures decibels, I'll report back after the Fullerton game.

Those around me were conversing comfortably and the music volume didn't register. You can disagree if you want but it's a fact. And I know several people who wear hearing aids who are very sensitive to louder music.

Gaslighting has nothing to do with it.

Volume in Haas seems fine to me and doesn't seem different than other college basketball games I've been to

Different locations may also affect acoustics. I know it does in Memorial

Hard to optimize for every person and location

If it's too loud you might try moving to different locations to see if it's better for you
