That defensive sequence made me feel joy about Cal Basketball. I forgot that feeling. God it is good to be back!!!!

Good win, thought the spread was too high, shooting by subs was terrible

they missed a ton of threes. Open ones. Unless we get really lucky, most acc teams are gonna drain those. We have to do a better job defending the perimeter. Two blocks to close out the game was nice. Hope it continues. Great game, but a hot hand with all of those open looks and we lose by double digits here, I think.

Yes. They played Defense. I really need to find time to watch Illinois and see if he still SUCKS at defending the high screen handoff.

Hmmm....maybe scouting? I mean I know the guys can stick. The scouting report may have suggested that you WANT utes shooting rather than letting them drive.

he had a great game overall, same as ucla. Really started slow tho. Hopefully that improves. He's a very good player.

If Cal can keep this going, do we start to get a little more buzz because Scottie Pippen is courtside at all of our games?

Good win over a high major

Dai Dai continues to Wow

Pippin is growing up before our eyes. Dai Dai and Pippin are our closers.

We missed Rytis.. maybe we rest him for a few as I don't think we need him till ACC

DJ gets minutes for defense and Bell loses minutes for his defense

We can't play without Dort.

Carr looked like a freshman, but that's to be expected. Dorsey a half-step too slow

Our defense is much better than last year but double teaming will give up open looks sometimes

FT shooting will win games we would have lost in prior seasons

Bears!

Not sure fair. I thought Iillic (sp) has had his best three games and I like his passing. Dort is amazing and the step up in his game has been great but after some HORRID hoop from Illic it feels like he is starting to adjust/get it.

Just checked to see where my favorite Pac 12 color guy ended up:

Don MacLean is currently a color analyst for the Big Ten Network.

I know he rubbed a lot of people wrong, and he was an unapologetic ucla homer (understandably), but he is my favorite color commentator. I miss him doing Cal games.

Not to be complaining about the officiating after a win, but...what the hell is Michael Greenstein STILL doing with a job on the court. How long has he tormented Cal? Seems like at least 20+ years, across two leagues!! The ludicrous calls on Dort and, especially, Ilic late in the game almost cost the Bears the game. The call on Ilic certainly changed the trajectory of the last few minutes, since it led to Ames getting his 4th foul. I half expected Mike Montgomery to storm the court...Luckily, Ames is too good for that!

Back from the Haas...

Somebody on some thread after the UCLA game posited that our win over the Bruins might ignite attendance at Haas. Well, sort of: there were hundreds and hundreds more fans at this one, compared to our previous home game!

I didn't think we played all that well, especially on defense, but that's the thing: the previous eight years, we lose this game, but tonight, we won!

Good games by:

Pippen (great defense at the end!)
Ames (this guy's got moves... almost as athletic as the freshman last year, maybe not as much vertical)
Dort (one basket shy of a double-double)

Not-so-hot:

Bell (he needs to be hitting from outside to be valuable for us)
TT (wasn't his night... like, at all)

That we actually won this one, that could be important down the road!
Go Bears!

Am I crazy or did the Athletic Dept. used to give season ticket holders a T-shirt on the Gold Out game or whatever it was? How is it a Haas of Pain if only 40 students are wearing the shirt that says so? I'm like the kid on the bike in Better Off Dead, 2 T-shirts, where's my 2 T-shirts?

The Haas of Pain shirt promo announced for tonight was 250 shirts for 'fans' and 750 shirts for students. I arrived around 6:30 at the front entrance and received a shirt (only XL available.)
I do agree that Cal has gotten very stingy with the shirts and other giveaways the last couple seasons. I've been to most of the MBB games and a few of the WBB games this season, and they haven't even been doing any t-shirt toss to fans during the game like they used to do in the 2nd half of every game with 20 to 30 shirts being thrown to fans. Most of the giveaways this year (at football & basketball games) for anything bigger than a rally towel have just been for students.

I miss Walton too….but Don gave better game analysis with a wry delivery similar to Brad Duggan, who did color with Steve Physioc's play by play for local college games on KTVU in the 1980's.
Walton gave superior pop culture references and book recommendations.

How to watch
Through a TV provider: Your cable or live TV streaming service subscription must include the ACC Network to get access to ACCNX.
Log in to the ESPN app: Once you have a qualifying subscription, you can stream ACCNX content using the ESPN app or by visiting ESPN.com/watch.

Browse for content: In the ESPN app or on the website, find ACCNX under the "Channels" or "Browse" section to see available live games and other programming.

Examples of providers that carry ACC Network (and therefore ACCNX)
DirecTV
Hulu + Live TV
YouTube TV
Sling TV
FuboTV
Optimum
Cox

I have Comcast/Xfinity with ACC Network, so does that grant me access to watch ACCNX? If so, could someone explain how? Would it still be through ESPN app (or website)?

Same here (Comcast in the East Bay). I can find the games on ACCNX through the ESPN app, but it takes a while and is a total pain in the azz. Then, when I get it, it sometimes freaks out during the commercials and maybe I have to exit and then go back in again.

In retrospect, I appreciate the Pac 12 Television Network (with Ashley Adamson as hostess).

So at some point next year, both Comcast and YouTube TV are supposed to get all of their customers free access to ESPN Unlimited, which means you'll have the full ESPN access tied to your ESPN login rather than the TV Provider login, which should help with not getting logged out so much. You could also use the Disney+ app to watch if you have that subscription as well (I find this a lot more stable than ESPN's app).

A couple of thoughts (I had to sail the seas to find a stream so I didn't have the luxury of DVR to rewatch specific sequences):

- If we see the Carr/Campbell/Dorsey backcourt together again, it better be because Ames and Pippen both fouled out or came done with the plague. That stretch in the first half was UGLY.

- Speaking of Dorsey, he seems like a portal miss in the early going due to both athleticism and skill limitations. But I hope he settles in and finds a role, in part because it will give us more options for minutes that Campbell would otherwise get.

- Dort was amazing. Under control, not overly aggressive while still being a presence and even some nice passing.

- Pippen was also amazing. His combination of athleticism and length for his position is unmatched on the team. I think our ceiling of being a very good team could very well rest on his ability to consistently knock down jumpers, finish drives and generally be decisive on offense

- Ames is such a stud. I am continually amazed by his efficiency on tough shot making at his size. And he could be so much more of a ballhog.

- We need some consistent half court sets to get Bell touches and hopefully open looks.

- I'm higher on Ilic than most. I don't think we have seen anywhere near his best yet. Or maybe I just confuse him with Camden lol.

I was at the game last night and as usual I don't post anything while its being played.

But it amazes me that I read these posts that are based on 5-7 minutes of basketball. How well did this declaration turn out to be?

That's why it's called a Game Thread, Red, you get to post as the game is running (I like posting while at the game, the TV time outs are way too long). And it's OK to say Pippen had a terrible first 5 minutes, it takes nothing away from what he did after that. In fact it makes me think better of him, he showed resilience when he started cold and made it a career night.

hiya G, we've got comcastic too. so with low expectations 20 minutes early we clicked on the streaming link, shared xfinity credentials, then (without optimism) waited.

until, surprise surprise, the content arrived ~last minute before tipoff.
