Campbell is what he is: a fifth-best-guard-on-the-roster type. Lacks length and inconsistent from beyond the arc. At the same time, he's an energy guy, a strong body who can contribute when we really need somebody to put out there on the floor.
I'm more concerned with Bell's inconsistency, since he has always been penciled in as one of our top seven rotational guys.
I just wish Campbell wasn't such a black hole when he gets the ball with 12-15 seconds left on the shot clock. (Ames, too, but not such a problem
if his shot is falling).
It looks to me like Bell is forcing things offensively. A bit of a catch-22 for him. He's trying to be productive (score) in his limited opportunities, but isn't getting many minutes because he hasn't been very productive, and his defense is mediocre at best. I guess there is a reason he came off the bench at Syracuse.
There was an interesting sequence near the end of the half. MM calls a timeout with 5 seconds left (I never understood why you would want to allow the opposing D to set up). Bell is on the court coming out of the TO, but at the last moment, MM switches him for Campbell?! I thought it was odd, but I guess the call was for Ames to get the ball out of bounds with a running start and take the last shot, no matter what. Ames made a tough contested layup, so I guess the call was genius!
