Ames will get offers.

If Dai Dai continues to play so poorly as the season progresses, his market value i going to take a serious hit.

I would take dearly departed Wilkinson any day over Ames

In the Post game press Madsen said his disappointed he was in how poorly the team performed- but as usual he always answers by saying that it is on him-as coach he takes full responsibility, blah blah blah. Is this a stock answer that is all he can say without calling out and alienating any of his players?

When a team is winning, everything the coach says sounds great. When they're losing, all the coach's comments get criticized. If Madsen mentions players' failure to get something done, he would get charged with "throwing his players under the bus".

The hedging we do was not working yetMadsen refused to abandon it . Players were getting wide open shots and making them.

I know Madsen knows a millions times more about basketball than I do, but I have never been a fan of the consistent use of aggressive hedging. Occasionally as a surprise makes sense, but teams can pick it apart and get easy shots when they expect it.

Isn't Ames a Junior?

Is he? My mistake. Then I hope he comes back but I also hope Madsen gets someone who's better, as well. This isn't meant to be a knock against Dai Dai, he's balled out for Cal this year. Rather, Dai Dai has shown that there are limits to what he can do and I hope Madsen finds someone whose limits exceed Dai Dai's.

I'm still in a bit of shock over that game…. I have never seen so much obvious contact ignored by refs in a single game.

I noticed that they called a very different game today. A lot of contact that has been a foul, not a foul today. I don't think it was completely one-sided, but I think that our players did not adapt to the different standard. It seemed to bother us more than it did Pitt. Not sure why.

There's no easy way to say this (it's not meant to be an insult to the team), but the reason all the physical play from Pitt and the refs allowing it to happen bothered us is because we're softer than other teams. Coaches have figured out their teams can muscle us around and win games that way, so they give them that order. I don't mean soft as some kind of macho thing, I'm saying soft as in, we don't have the same bulk (except for Dort), and we don't have the same aggressiveness or "give it back when they give it to you" mentality." The softer team often loses big when the refs won't call all the arm-pulling, body-banging and other questionable stuff Pitt was handing us.
I wouldn't have minded a few technical fouls this year, a few shoving matches under the basket after tempers flare, just a few more signs of toughness that would let the other team know we mean business. Haven't seen any of that this year, probably because Madsen wants his players to model good sportsmanship like he does… but there's a time to get nasty, too.

Yes, this has been my overall take on this team all season. We are just not physical enough, and in the games we have lost (maybe K-state excepted) our lack of strength inside has been the primary reason we've come out on the short end.

Maybe if we had Sammie healthy earlier in the season we could have been giving him more minutes later in the season. If Lee isn't eligible to come back next year we need another center with his physicality to replace him, and we need to pick up another "4" that fits the traditional role as well. The ACC will not let us make it higher in the standings unless we get more players like this.

I have a feeling Madsen will be able to find serviceable bigs like Lee and Ilic without too much trouble. What he needs is for Shaq to help advocate for him publicly (give shoutouts and talk about how was a good big in the Association). Madsen should be able to coach up bigs, the problem is finding ones with high ceilings who can and want to matriculate at Cal.

If Madsen can become the second coming of Pete Newell (at least re big man development), that should help give Cal an edge in the paint. If he can then work with Monty to develop his Xs and Os and how to develop wings and guards, some blueblood will want to hire him. But let's burn that bridge when we get to it.

Madsen has coached up bigs all three years.
Dort this year is majorly better than last year.
Sissoko was hugely better than he had been in prior years.
Aimaq also became better than he had ever been.

Madsen has a story to sell - but does he have the financial resources?

This is all true, but practically speaking it doesn't matter to recruiting a top tier big until one of his guys becomes an NBA prospect or at least is a top-ten big across the NCAA. So he has to start with someone a lot further along, easier said than done if you have limited money to spend. I would spend 70% on 4s and 5s, maybe more, that's how critical it is.
On the "you mean Mad Dog" comment, I would say precisely, why don't we have a pack of Mad Dogs out there who might use a few sharp elbows to please the Big Mad Dog?
As I said before, hardening up the team is not just physical size (Yeanay's ineffectiveness so far shows that) but increasing a hard-nosed attitude.
Before I get accused of agreeing with Red (you know I can't go that far, Red I'll say a "bump and grind" attitude is NOT the same as "intensity," or "coming out to play." I believe every Cal player has been trying their best this season, the bad games come from other sources, not lack of effort or intensity.

Please give Madsen credit for getting the most out of a low NIL budget squad.

To judge Madsen properly, give him a $8M-$10M NIL fund to compete fairly with the top half of the ACC.

Lol, I never knew I had such a shi*tty reputation! I agree, the bump and grind attitude is a separate issue from intensity - I mentioned that the intensity comment came out of sheer frustration with Saturday's game. Bottom line, we need some bigger and stronger guys, period.

BTW, please don't call me "Red", can you at least go with "RedLess."? When I'm simply called Red it really hurts!
