Second half effort would do it at Wake IMO
they need to come out with their hair on fire. Rebound like they mean it, and play defensive lights out. We have it in us. Madsen needs to bring it out. Next game is, once again, the most important game in a decade.baytobreakers said:

I guess we'll have to wait until the next loss to fire him.

Seriously. Hard to believe we won, given that 15 minutes into the game, a lot of our fans thought it was over.
Some of y'all ever heard the term "small sample size"? How about "ebb and flow"?

True. But I thought your critique of Madsen not earning his salary was premature. They came through and did what they needed to do against a bad team. It just took them way too long to do it because they were plagued by an inexplicable inability too do what they've done all season--hit threes. Eventually they regressed to the mean and started hitting them. Against Pitt that didn't happen. I prefer waiting until the game is over before making major pronouncements. Today the wait was worthwhile.
And my opinion on Madsen? Even if we lose our next two games, which is entirely possible, the turnaround in Cal's fortune this season shows that he has earned his salary. Maybe more. See you at the NIT. Unless we exceed expectations. Go Bears!

Plus many. AND today we added a 7 foot consensus top 50 recruit. Yeah. He is thin but lots of bigs are and he is a legit stretch 4/5.
Has Madsent been massive 1 year turn around magician? No. But Cal plays with a Honda budget. The worst cal fans are those that act like we are Duke when we spend like San Jose State and support our AD like Yale. For the waters we actually swim in Madsen has been a home run hire. Want better? Dig d$$p.

I don't know yet whether Madsen is a home run hire, but at least a solid single and not a strike out. This year is not over. Even then I would normally want to see how he does next year in year 4 before deciding. However, Knowlton gave him a contract extension until 2030 so any debate at this point is pointless. We are not replacing him anytime soon. We all just have to root for him, support him with NIL and hope he eventually delivers a tournament team.

Madsen is doing an excellent job, is a great leader, program builder and total class act, the most likeable and personable head coach we've had in decades. Signing him on a long contract is the only positive legacy from Knowlton's disastrous tenure.

The long term success of Madsen will nearly be 100% dependent on how successful Cal is in getting a good NIL budget. I think he is a competent enough coach and players do seem to improve under his watch.
What will be crucial IMO is being able to compete for a few guys that are true impact guys. I have no idea how close Cal is to providing a good NIL budget. But if they can make that breakthrough then I do think we will really be able to see if Madsen is a home run hire or something else.
In the current environment you see players all over the nation leaving for money or PT. Teams do not stay together like they used to. So you need a strong annual NIL budget. I think Cal is making some headway in that area. But I keep reading that a few big donors are still needed.
I have a few questions still regarding Madsen as a game day coach, but he has been better this season. But unless he is given the sort of NIL budget needed to acquire a better overall roster and a few real impact guys it will be hard to tell just how good an actual coach he is. These days the better teams are stocked with talent. Given all the turnover it is too hard to rely on player development and continuity.
