Why didn't he just leave ? What a puppet ! He should've been smarter than this because just shut the whole program down !

He should've. This program is dead for the foreseeable future.

I'm concerned but there's no need for this level of meltdown yet

Mark should've went to ASU. A very stupid decision.

He's very gullible and is always lied to (I don't blame him).

Was he? I mean I think the NIL is where the NIL is. The bottom line is that Cal needs to be QUANTUMLY better funded to retain guys like Pippen and Ames so we are were we are.

He needs to get out. We dont deserve him. Hes not being set up to compete. Taking over a RSF court isnt a real 'practice facility' it's just a band-aid over a huge problm. The program needs saving and it starts now.

Sorta confused about what this means? The program is essentially dead. Not sure you can save a corpse.

I think many are overstating the perceived attractiveness of Madsen. He has done well at UVU and Cal, but he has yet to make ONE NCAA tourney appearance.

Ehh. He needs more better players but in this era Bull**** walks and money talks. Cal doesn't have the money.

If he can replicate a 20+ win season again next year, then I could see him garnering some real interest.

Pretty sure he made the tourney at his last school.

I am 100% sure he didn't make the NCAA tourney at Utah Valley.

True. He made the NIT

Madsen took Utah Valley to the NIT semifinals in 2022-23:

Yeah, what power conference team would hire a guy who'd never been to the tournament? Oh…wait….

Mark never had an actionable offer to go to ASU. Bennett was always their first choice. Eric Olen was very likely #2.

Why did so many assume that Madsen would be a target of ASU?

There was some buzz. I think a rando on twitter posted it. Some chatter on this board. It wasn't that implausible.

Completely taking over the third floor courts in the RSF and adding dedicated money to remodel it is an awesome practice facility. The problem is NIL and lack of a GM or competent AD.

Because a lot of people on this board love to jump on speculative news. Sometimes it feels like they enjoy talking about stuff that isn't going to happen more than the games that are actually played by Cal teams.

I don't know why you guys think he has better options. Cal was and is a good opportunity for him. He was fine at Utah Valley. He took over a team that was 12-4 in conference whose coach got a better gig. He didn't do a masterful rebuild. He won the conference his last year and went to one NIT. The coach before him had the same overall career record at UVU. The coach after him has a better one. He has done a solid job here. 2 NIT's in 7 years does not make a coach highly sought after. We are perfectly deserving of his services.

Which is not to say we don't need to up our game in NIL. I've said he deserves us pushing our chips in. But 1. We don't know if these guys are leaving or if they are testing the market. 2. We don't know that if they get a better offer that we won't match. Frankly, while I've said we need to keep both, they are not so good that we should throw a big pile of cash so that they don't even look at other offers. I'm good with them testing their value and we negotiate from there. 3. Everyone should have expected they would test their value market. Why wouldn't they. 4. When you sign guys through the transfer portal, you should expect they will test their value in the portal every year. 5. Even if they leave, you don't know money was the deciding factor.

Well said.

This also is not an issue that is exclusive to Cal. Seems like some schools have their entire team in the portal (lot of Buffs, Kentucky, K-St, USF, Northwestern, Georgia, etc...)

I would add that if he keeps us at the 20 win/NIT level for a few years, and he does that while Cal does not up its NIL game (which will be readily apparent by the recruits we pull), or if he gets us into the tourney under those conditions, he will probably get his shot somewhere. But one year of modest success under trying circumstances isn't going to do it. He ain't there yet.

Because many perceive the job as a near impossible situation that modest success looks like a coaching masterclass. Low NIL, low fanbase support, tough competition, lots of travel, academic requirements, tepid administrative support, horrendous short-term program history, etc.
