The Bears picked up a commitment today from Georgia soph small forward Jake Wilkins.

The 6-9/185 SF a was consensus 4 star prospect rated 35th overall nationally in the Class of 2025 by Rivals, originally choosing the Bulldogs over Virginia, Indiana, Cincinnati and Alabama after averaging 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.6 steals per game for his Rams squad, who finished 28-4 and reached the semifinals of the Class 6A state tournament before falling to eventual champion Wheeler. As a junior, he averaged 14.1 points, 8.1 boards and 2.5 assists to help Grayson capture its first-ever state title in boys’ basketball.

The son of NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, Wilkins continues the trend of the Bears bringing in famous offspring of NBA starts, including Justin Pippen, Andrej Stojakovics, Stephon Marbury Jr, Nick Kerr, Omar and Jordan Wilkes and Jules Erving. Wilkins followed his Hall of Fame father to Georgia, where he averaged 21.6 points per game before going on to star in the NBA.

Like his father, Wilkins will bring an injection of tantalizing athleticism ready to be harnessed.

In his freshman season at Georgia, Wilkins averaged 4.9 points and 1.8 rebounds, shooting 46.6% from the floor in 10 mpg before entering the portal. He is the first of an expected several portal commits to come in the coming days for the Bears.

Can Jake fill the void that Chris Bell likely leaves as a 6' 9" wing? Chris obviously has a better stroke from beyond the arc, but Jake sounds like he is more athletic and perhaps a better defender.

With Dort, Yeanay, and Wilkins we now have 3 long, athletic guys with unproven offensive skills. With Carr, Ruff, and Bakare we also have 3 athletic perimeter players with unproven offensive skills. Should be fun to watch them play and develop but now I'd like to add a few shooters.

I don't think he would have signed yesterday if he wasn't given some assurance that he has every shot to earn 25+ mins a game like Bell.

I would assume there's at least 1 other program that would have been willing to throw money his way but likes the developmental opportunity here (which means he would be gone next year if all goes well).

In an ideal world, he earns a prominent starting/6th man role as an impactful role player (better defense and rebounding) but with lower offensive usage.

With him, TT and Dort, Madson hopefully is working really hard to get a Dai Dai replacement who can create their own bucket.

Mark likely is looking hard to land a consistent 3 point shooting threat who preferably can create his own shots and likes to take the crunch time shots that win or lose games as an iceman

If he's 6;9" why is he called small forward, is it based on the position not size thus a 6;2' guy could be a small forward?

Yes. Position is based on... position.
