he is as good a player as collison on the offensive end, although not on the defensive end. I've always felt that it was his defense that held him back, although he improved this last year.

Everyone focused on his shooting, but he has always been a good passer.

Interesting how close he was to transferring. I knew Harper was also close to transferring.

He's no smaller than 2010 Most Improved Player Aaron Brooks, and just as good of shooter. I think he could stick in the league.

I agree, and I think Jerome is better than Brooks

Jerome Randle is not better than Aaron Brooks.

Collison definitely held the edge in their head-to-head matchups in college, and showed how far Randle still had to go. Jerome is a guy who really needed all four years of college to fully develop the positive aspects of his game, while off-loading the negatives. (Except for his height, which he can't do anything about.) I'm still wondering how he is going to guard people in the NBA, because he struggled with it even in college. But I'm thinking more and more that he's got a shot to make it. He seems smart enough to figure out the specialist role he'll have to fill on an NBA team, and adapt to it. (The way Leon Powe figured out how to make himself valuable, and fully embraced the role player slot.)

Randle is better than Brooks was when Brooks was leaving college. Brooks took a huge leap in his game once he hit the NBA though.

I was comparing Randle's senior years to Collison and Brooks senior years

That makes sense, I should have assumed that, I think the players are comparable coming out of college, I think seeing Brooks and his development makes me think Randle can be successful in the NBA. I really want to add more Cal players to the NBA to get me to watch more, just like the more Cal players in the NFL gets me more motivated to watch more NFL games.

You might as well tell me that the sky is green. Doesn't make it true. Randle is about 5'8, Brooks is maaaaaybe 5'9.

brooks at pre-draft camp: 5'10.5" without shoes, 5'11.75" with.

it's overcast here today, so I won't presume to tell you what the sky color is.

I am a huge fan of Randle, but an nba scout has to decide he can score more than he gives up on D. In college the answer was yes (with his teammates covering for his reluctant defense), but it's harder to hide a poor defender in the nba, especially an undersized one.
The upside for Jerome is that everyone knows he is quick enough to stay in front of his man - can he show the will to hustle on D consistently? He improved on D toward the end of his senior year and he has matured so much. Europe seems a more natural fit (defense isn't emphasized). They say the nba always has room for a great shooter - I hope he makes it.

I was way off with the actual heights, but pretty darn close on their height differences. I said about an inch - in reality, Jerome is 5' 9.25", 1.25 inches shorter than Brooks.

Booya.

actually you initially said "no smaller" but I'll give it to you. I'd have said the actual difference was greater. i'm a little shocked actually that someone's height is so close to his listed height.

I always thought that reach is more important than height. The fact that Brooks's reach is 7'10", Randle only 7'4.5" seems more significant.

I have added the italics:

"The new head man [...referring to Mike Montgomery] and his future star player saw eye to eye on much more than Randle expected, and with the added freedom of the new offense he was in, Randle's game flourished."

Don't shoot the messenger. The quote is by the author and is surely derived from Randall's interview comments.

I'm not a skilled basketball analyst by any means, but Monty seems to give his players the freedom to shoot early in the clock to a greater extent than his predecessor, and he doesn't seem to be quite as disturbed by a missed shot.

I wouldn't get too far ahead of yourself...

As for next year's team:

"I don't think we'll give anybody the kind of freedom we gave Jerome," Montgomery said of departing senior point guard Jerome Randle, whose deep shooting ability earned him a green light.

Without a proven post scoring threat, Cal will once again depend on a perimeter-oriented offense. Discipline will be the watch word on offense with a tenacious defense aimed at helping to create scoring opportunities in transition. Kamp's passing ability out of the post will help set-up open looks for his teammates. As the frosh guards and wings become acclimated to D-1 ball, and their play warrants Monty's confidence, the "yellow" light will be the rule. Meanwhile, I expect Monty's offense will work to create scoring opportunities--perimeter and from penetration--for his freshmen sharpshooters. The key being "within the offense". Instilling discipline in highly-ranked freshmen newcomers will be the challenge. It will be an interesting season.
