Best Low Post Bears

Dependable low post scorers are hard to come by. Who were the best in Cal history? And why were they so good? I'll start.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim. He would be my number one. Smooth, quick, great feet, always got a good shot. But his best attribute was he NEVER missed inside of 10 feet. Incredible touch with either hand. I want him to come teach low post offense to Solo.

Sean Lampley. His senior year, if he caught it in his spot and you didn't double, it was a bucket off the glass or a foul (or both), every time.

Leon Powe? I don't really remember his game. Someone fill me in. I must have been kidnapped by aliens for a couple of years. Was he better than Lampley?

Brian Hendricks? I don't really remember his game, either. Isn't he HOFer Dave Hendricks' son? Dave had that one weird play where he beaned a seagull in Toronto warming up between innings. Anyone remember that?

Markhuri had the one move from the right block. Two dribbles to his left, jump hook over the right shoulder. Predictable but we would love to have him on the roster this year.

Who else?

Sean Lampley, great low post scorer.

Mark McNamara shot 70% for 22 points per game as a senior, and I doubt he ever took a shot outside 3 feet.

Lampley and Powe have been the best in my few years.

Brian Hendricks is the son of GEORGE Hendricks who played baseball for a number of teams, most notably the St Louis Cardinals. Dave Winfield was the player who beaned a seagull. You had the right sport but mixed up the names

Brian was a good player for the Bears

Leon Powe in my own memory.
Sean Lampley was good against 2nd tier defenders, but couldn't score against legit big men.

Now we are talking about low post. Shareef and Anderson were better scorers. And Kiwi by the time he was a senior was a better offensive player. McNamara played in the NBA for a few years but as someone mentioned never took a shot beyond 3 feet.

Another good post was Leonard Taylor.

Powe could score down low but I am not sure he was a post player.

Lampley did have trouble scoring in the post against some very good, taller big men but he scored in the post against all sorts of "legit" big men and took the better players outside and scored on them in his last year or two.

+1, and this was something Powe could not do.

Lampley was dominant his senior year. What made him really good was that he could pass extremely well out of the double team.

Anderson was extremely underrated as a low post scorer. He's now a three point specialist of sorts, but in college he did his damage down low.

Grigsby....he was the definition of "going up strong". Great touch and relentless.

Shareef. He could do some stuff outside, but had some very nice post moves.

I remember a lot of threes from Anderson, too.

imho Lampley, Powe, Hendricks were all very good low post scorers, I don't think Yogi Stewart was too bad either.

Come on people, LT Leonard Taylor! Dave Butler too.

I'd also mention two dinosaurs, Darrall Imhoff and Bob Presley. Very hard to stop in deep.

Harper Kamp in his last season was not too shabby.

It is off topic, but posts have to play defense too, so the best were Imhoff and Presley, IMO, with Yogi, Taylor, Grigsby, and Powe not far behind.

I wondered when someone would finally mention Imhoff! Presley was tough, and Ainsley Truitt wasn't bad, although not in Imhoff's or McNamara's league.

Yep, as a freshman 38% of his attempts were 3-Pointers, and 33% as a sophomore.

He made 38% of his 3-Pointers as a freshman and 41% as a sophomore, but only 53% of his 2 Pointers both year. Looked at in isolation, I'd say he was generally more effective outside on offense.

His freshman year he played alongside Powe, who was dominant inside, so they made a nice combo, allowing Anderson to play outside.

His sophomore year, while he played some with Hardin early on, for most of the season Braun went small with Boykin or Vierniesal at the 4, bringing in Hardin as Anderson's back-up. Even though he was our only big on the floor for most of that year, Anderson still shot a third of his shots outside.

We came in second to last, Anderson left for the NBA and Braun was fired.

Yes MSF as a senior really deserves to be on the list. If he was in single coverage, which he usually was as I remember, he was almost automatic in the post.
