Good place for a bite to eat before basketball. Great Burgers cooked perfectly and the fries were also very good. The wiskeys look interesting but we had Coke. Would definetly go back and maybe try the pulled pork which they make in house. Yes Loonies is gone, this is better. Also Great service and many TV's.

I know one of the owners of Eureka. They have opened a bunch of those in Ca college towns. Played golf with him. Good to hear the food is good. i tried one of his other restaurants on Shattuck--Comal. The best thing I can say about the food there is that the margaritas were good.

Talk about getting spun around. I read oskidunker's post with a grain of salt as I believe he recommended Loonies to some Kansas fans a few years back. Then I perked up when you mentioned the ties to Comal as it gets pretty good reviews, only to wonder again when you said you didn't care for the food at Comal.

Guess I'll just have to try them both for myself!

I was underwhelmed with the food at Comal as well. But the space is nice and lively - perfect for drinks.

Went there before a football game and second the burgers. Great selection of beer as well. Had my first IPL ever there.

I thought Comal had pretty good tapas. The atmosphere is great. I also really liked Cancun Tacqueria, as I like how they use locally grown produce, and they have a terrific salsa bar.

Comal's food is good but not great but what really makes that place is the back patio and vibe. Very cool and needed in Berkeley. Back in the day if you had a date it was Spats or just crap...there was no Comal.

Cancun was a regular stop when I lived in Berkeley, like 5 yrs ago. Before the Arizona game stopped by to get a burrito for the game..and walked out because $8.50 for the basic burrito is just too much. I think a fully loaded burrito (guac, crema, etc.) was $11.50. I know they use quality ingredients but I'm use to paying $5 bucks for very good burritos in Oakland. That said, I heard the nopales and mole are worth it at Cancun.

As several people posted, the atmosphere on the back patio at Comal--the margarita garden, whatever--is great. Very tasteful and hip. The guac and chips was also good. The food was kind of trying too hard to be trendy with, for example, cinnamon on the pork and other spices and vegetables that you wouldn't see on tapas in Spain.
100% a great place to meet on the back patio and drink. After that, draw your own conclusions.
