That's cool that everyone is undefeated. Baylor is the only one that played anyone, although Minnesota's road win @Richmond sounds impressive (although not sure if they are any good this season). Can't wait to see our team, as well as people from other sides: Gary Franklin, Jr., Boeheim, Few, Karnowski, etc.

Richmond beat Belmont at home, and Belmont then went and beat North Carolina, so if the transitive property applied in basketball it would mean Minnesota's really good. Of course it doesn't, so who knows.

Here's an amazing quote I found at nropp.com about our first opponent, Arkansas (incidentally, Mike Anderson was the coach Ricky played for in his one year at Mizzou):

Quote:

Believe it or not, since Mike Anderson took over two years ago, the Razorbacks have only won two games in a road or neutral setting...and both have come against Auburn. At home, they're 35-3 the last two seasons. On the road, they're 2-22. To say that it is puzzling would be an understatement of epic proportions. And the amazing part in the home/road splits is that it's like comparing apples to oranges - it's just not even close. It's one thing to dominate at home, and in some cases fall short on the road or lose a couple heart-breakers. It's another thing to completely obliterate your opponent at home, then get completely obliterated by your opponent on the road.

They win by an average of over 13 points at home, and lose by over 12 on the road. Really hope we're not the team to break that trend!

Syracuse is for sure not as good as last year. The replacement for MCW is another freshman All-American point guard, but he's no MCW. The other senior guard they had last year, Triche, is also gone. There's no guarantee they get by Minnesota, so we could end up playing them whether or not we beat Arkansas!

I really hope we finish with Baylor or Gonzaga. Those are two of the teams I have the most (irrational?) dislike for outside of the Pac-12, and wins over either would really be sweet! Baylor because of their recruiting-only based success, and Gonzaga because they're a bunch of damn dirty Spokaneites.

This does seem irrational, but I'll take the win too! Beating either of these teams would be a legitimate win.

Last time we played a Mike Anderson team (@Mizzou) we got beaten down pretty bad. Hope the pace doesn't kill us.

If you're referring to the bloodbath in 2011, I think that was Frank Haith's first year and Anderson was already gone.

Oh, right. Same kind of system though right? Is that why Kreklow left (because Anderson left)?

For sure yes to the first question, Arkansas likes to run and press. I think yes to the second question as well.

Actually Arkansas beat a decent SMU team yesterday.

Comparing scores again, Baylor beat ULL 87-68 IIRC while Arkansas beat them 76-63 in a hard fought game. Not sure that means much though. ULL has a PG that should be drafted that killed us.

We had a 24 point lead on SMU before they came back and cut it to within 6 late in the game...so that's pretty worrisome. Like someone said earlier, it is pretty crazy how different we play on the road vs. at home...we beat kentucky, florida and missouri at home last year and lost to teams like texas A&M, vanderbilt and south carolina on the road. Syracuse was our only home loss.

Hopefully this year's team can play a lot better away from home or we're going 0-2 in this tourney

Not possible .... Everyone gets 3 games :p

Either way, it should be a good opening round game for both teams as well as the tournament. Good luck to you guys (but not too much)

Arkansas lost their three top players, two opted for the NBA draft and neither got drafted and the third transferred to Kansas. If our two bigs can stay out of foul trouble we should win the game.

That's a little misleading. Their top scorer so far this year is a transfer from Houston (Alandise Harris) and they also added a 5-star PF who's playing well (Bobby Portis). Plus they had a lot of freshman last year who should be better, so they're a pretty different team. What they don't have, though, is a point guard.

Isn't everyone's success based mostly on recruiting?

Hunter mickelson, the one who transferred to kansas, wasn't our 3rd best player at all. He actually regressed from his freshman year and i'll be surprised if he ever does anything for KU. BJ young had the worst 3 point % on the team and didnt really get along with his teammates, athough he was very talented with the ball.

We've actually looked much better so far without them but time will tell. As the other poster said, portis and harris coming in really helped and SG anthlon bell along with SF michael qualls have made huge jumps from their freshman year. We still dont have a PG though

Thanks GH14
i'm certainly not thinking "cal should win the game",
we have some good potential but a lot of question marks.

i'm looking forward to seeing how cal will play away from home against a good team like the razorbacks.

I'm most impressed with Baylor - beating two teams on the same day is quite a feat and Colorado is a good team. I didn't pay attention to note if they played them first or second. Either way pretty awesome for our Bear cousins

When someone from Cal declares, "Cal should win the game", in a game of any significance, red flags automatically shoot up. How many times do you have to be burned by Cal sports before never saying a statement like that?

Re Syracuse, Ennis has had a rough start shooting, but I think he is going to be very good. Especially as a distributor.

Re Baylor, I am not sure what you mean by "recruiting-only based success." Their top two scorers - Heslip and Chery - were very lightly recruited out of HS.

I mean their coach sucks, and their success (such as it is) comes only from their talent. I am not necessarily correct about this, but, hey, it's a free country.

Chery may have been lightly recruited out of high school, but Baylor recruited him out of JC, by which point I think he was pretty well regarded.

I would love to. New job though, so I don't have the accrued time to be able to get away. And the elephant in the room (e.g., billable hours) is ever present. That bastard.

Have fun with Ben wa balls. I'm jealous. Be sure to count how many times he says "we suck." If the basketball team is doing well, talk Cal football. He'll revert back to the norm.

Oh, by the way. We suck.
