Great representative of the Oakland style of basketball. Used to love to see GP play that "in your booty" defense, cock his head to the side and talk trash in that distinctive voice of his.

Thanks -- great little interview. Wow, still weird to think of him now as the "old school". Always will be the young, brash, cocky, destroyer in my mind. Memories of playing pickup with him and Greg Foster one summer day. Beet-red eyes yelling "Next!" and waving the next five guys on to the court to get whupped.

Greg Foster was the big recruit off that team and he started his carreer at Ucla before transferring to UTEP. Payton was lightly recruited, he committed to St. John's before they pulled his offer, then tried to go to UTEP who had offered but they said they no longer had a scholarship for him. He ended up in Corvallis as kind of a last resort.Lou Campanelli said at the time of his recruitment, "there are 50 point guards in New York City better than Gary Payton." Lou also failed to recruit any on the Barry brothers from De La Salle!

Lou did recruit a PG out of Campolindo. We used to say "there are 50 point guards in the RSF that are better than Kyle Campanelli"
