What about Few?

I assume he said no to Nike U prior to Altman. Anyone know the story? Pretty clear he has hit structural issues up at Zaga that make it near impossible for them to get enough good opponents scheduled in the pre season to be able to get battle tested enough to make a run. One MIGHT think that the expiration data is starting to get close - it has been since 2008 since he made it past the first week - and that with a TON of good seeds.

Though this suggests he is a guy that is content to beat up little sisters of mercy at the one WCC school able to recruit on bigger stages and accept getting run in the tournament.

If that's the case, he'd not be a good fit because it will take someone with a lot of "fire in the belly" to be successful here.

much more likely now than before. Similar to Peterson leaving Boise after so many years to coach in a major conference

Few makes $1.5 million and is at a more successful program with much less competition. Only incentive IMHO to go to a mid level Pac 12 job like Cal would be $ and we aren't going to pay it.

He turned down his alma mater, why would he go to Wazzu or Cal? Few would be fired within 3-4 years if he didn't succeed at Cal or Wazzu. He pretty much has tenure at Gonzaga.

Monty currently makes $2M. I assume we can do the same for someone like Few.

Krystkowiak makes $900,000.
Hmmm.

Now that is funny after suffering through so many years under Braun. One of the attractive points of Cal is how little pressure there is.

Cal plays in a great conference and there is a ton of local basketball talent. And it has the best weather in the world. That has to count for something.

Not much of a bump vs Spokane.

The announcers at one of their NCAA games were commenting that in an interview he was obsessed with the fishing up there, and how available and great that it is. Could be some lifestyle issues getting him to come here.

I think lifestyle has had a lot to do with his staying at Gonzaga. The weather wouldn't suit me but if you like winter sports, hunting, fishing, hiking, climbing there are plenty of nearby, affordable options. Also, his sons are just heading into their teens, a tricky time to move kids. If we're going to take a flyer on an up and coming assistant, Tommy Lloyd gets a lot of the credit for the Zags' recruiting success, especially in Europe.

This is the same myopia I complained about in the other thread. Mark Few isn't coming to Cal for the same reasons that Shaka Smart or Archie Miller aren't coming to Cal. OK, maybe slightly more likely that he'd come than those guys -- but still very unlikely. But don't forgot to say Sandy should be fired when she doesn't hire him.

I'm betting for the right coach Cal will pay $2mil plus. I'm not saying who it'll be, just how much.

And don't be surprised if we already have someone in the wings and there's an announcement after next weekend.

I don't think she makes that kind of hire. Nobody really cares about basketball that much-I think the revenue is 1/3 of football. Monty was something that fell in her lap and was a prudent investment and no lose proposition.

This time I bet she gets some guy in the $1-1.5 range but it won't be Few. Right or wrong the Cal basketball coach will not make more than the Cal football coach.

If some "well known coach" wants the Bay Area for personal reasons (e.g., Monty, Wright) than Sandy will get donor support. Remember, Sonny had one head coaching job with some success before Cal, where a guy like Wright has major resume. My guess is there is no one out there right now to fall into Sandy's lap, and your bet is correct.

Actually we only suffered 3-4 years under Braun (and Tedford). He was a great get up until the the true monster class imploded.

Yup. His first 6-7 years compare pretty evenly to Monty's. In what what more often than not a stronger conference, he took us to a Sweet 16 and even won a National Championship.

Braun ball was unwatchable from day one. I care about style.

That first year, with Ed Gray going off, and then after his injury, the unexpected run in the NCAA tournament around Tony Gonzalez, was fun.

It was basically still Bozeman's run and gun NBA-style team forced to play defense.

It was only in subsequent years that Braun was able to fully implement his preferred defense first, slow-down tempo on offense and we were able to see (if we could stay awake) what Braun-ball was all about.

Few absolutely has to be on the short list. Don't think he'd be interested, but at the very least you have to get him on the horn and offer him the gig.

Still thinking a guy like Russell Turner at UC Irvine ends up as the guy.

Regarding Turner: this is where I see the donors flexing a little bit of muscle. they are going to expect a "name" candidate and will not bankroll another dykes like hire at this point. Whether its a legit candidate or a retread with name recognition, I fully expect this to go to a known coach. Turner isnt a big enough name at this point. This is what terrifies me when I hear names like Ben Howland.

Yeah unfortunately that makes sense and Howland terrifies me too. Just like some here are enamored with his resume I could see some big donors/Sandy(even Monty?) thinking he was actually a good idea instead the worst possible candidate. I'd MUCH rather take a small risk on TD or Gates than put up a lot of money on someone I know is going to be a disaster.
