at least they could've made the "free gifts" for renewing at Haas better than a bunch of junk they had lying around to make it a bit more palatable

Maybe. But it is in keeping with the same early renewals they've begun doing in football. I have a feeling they had planned to do early renewals long before Monty began rumbling of retiring.
