Why not go after Greg Marshall from Wichita State?

I don't know if he's signed to a long term deal there, but love the way his teams play and really got a lot out of limited resources, etc.

I'd take him in a heartbeat. He's had success at 2 different programs at different levels of competition and in different areas of the country. I can't think of a better option that we have any likelihood of landing.

Signed a seven-year contract last year, but I'm thinking we could give him a pretty good bump compared to that.

In an interview earlier this year, he sounded pretty frustrated by the lack of respect his team got... maybe it's time for him to move to the 'big time'?

Marshall is top notch, no doubt. He has a rolling 7 year deal. It pays him 1.75Mil in 2014. He also got another 500K a year pool for his assistants and operations personnel. He is the mayor of Wichita, living large. I don't think we can meet the compensation and security package he has there even if it is a so-called mid-major. Granted the MVC isn't strong, especially with Creighton exiting, but he is in an enviable position and I doubt Cal could extricate him from that deal.

I forgot to add that Wichita State plays to sellouts in the Koch Arena, ~10,500, and many of the MVC locations draw very large crowds. So it doesn't exactly feel like a mid-major environment that you might see in the Big West or WCC.

A+ hire but would be a reach. We would like be looking at 2.5 to compensate for the vast gulf between southern Kansas and the East Bay housing prices.

Flip side...until Bill S. hangs it up he will ALWAYS be second fiddle (or even third behind K State). That has to irk him.

There are bigger and better jobs out there for Gregg Marshall and he knows it. He's not coming to Cal.

You have to call Mark Few if you're Barbour, but I don't think he'd be interested. I would think Russell Turner at UCI or Randy Bennett at St. Mary's, although he has baggage, are more likely if we don't hire from within

Really the only job right now that I think will open up at a "power school" in the next three years is Duke. Coach K is 67 (Roy Williams is 63). The other guys at power schools are in their 50s. So MAYBE he is holding out for Duke.....

(interesting thought - that may be true for a LOT of the hotest guys - like SHaka. Has anyone ever read what the succession plan there is?)

Doesn't make a ton of sense to wait for Duke. Coach K just announced he's coaching at least 5 more years. Could be a smoke screen for recruiting, but let's assume it's at least 3 years. Marshall/Smart could take a big job now and still land the Duke job when Coach K does retire.

We'll see what happens during and after the Final Four. Is Fred Hoiberg going to the NBA? Is Tom Izzo? Cuonzo Martin almost left Tennessee, if he had gone to Marquettte supposedly Marshall was the guy in Knoxville and he wanted the job.

Will be interesting to see what jobs open up in the next week or so

None of those guys (especially Bennett) will get the job. Decuire would get it over Bennett or Turner.

I don't understand this reasoning. Is living in the largest house imaginable really the sole motivation for career moves, or even a principal one? If so, we would have no faculty and no administrators at Berkeley-- we would all be getting big salaries at Wichita State. In my experience people give up quite a bit to live in the incredible Bay Area. Who really needs a 7000 sq ft house anyway?

That's not the point. A better question is: who takes a pay cut to come here? Because if he makes 1.5, then 2.0 is probably a pay cut. It's also not a matter of a 7000 sq ft. house--not when people are paying $1m for condos.

Faculty aren't a good comparison, because the differences in salary aren't as great and the benefit of coming here is working with others in your field who are world-class.

People that think We have a chance at Marshall know absolutely nothing about non-cal related college basketball.

Marshall has been offered better jobs and more money but he has refused.
Marshall is on record saying that he absolutely hates relocating and wants to stay at a given job for as long as possible, particularly because of his family.

Mark few, Archie Miller, the Tusla coach (too lazy to look up spelling of his name) Ben Howland, And Randy Bennett are all more far more realistic options. My personal preference would be Howland, Miller, and our own TD in that order.

Also worth noting, certain faculty get their housing taken care of for them.

Really? Even if the housing price differential is $1.5 million (e.g, costs $2.0 million for a house comparable to one that costs $500k in the town the coach is currently in), the compensating salary bump would only be about $75k (assumes 5% financing cost on $1.5 million differential).

The salary is pre-tax, but the interest cost is deductible, so no need for the bump to be after-tax.

Perhaps also a small adjustment for higher property tax, and maybe an interest-free loan of about $300k if the downpayment would be a problem.

Still, far less than a $500k bump.

Wojo will take over Duke when Coach K hangs it up. The timing is perfect for him. He takes a head coaching job now, proves himself and if successful gets the Duke job. Coach K will have a say, so if Smart or Marshall are hoping for the job, they're wasting their time.

The fact that you want Howland shows how little you know about non-Cal related basketball. Get a grip.

It's always worth a try to talk to people like Marshall -- the worst he could do is say no.

I think we simply don't know. Of the "power programs (Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana) it is the only one that hasn't undergone several succession changes and allowed for a test of whether it is brand or the individual coach. I TEND to bet that it will remain very good. It plays in a great conference with tons of East Coast love. It doesn't really compete for Football for attention. It has a ton of ex-NBA'ers that will continue to shill for it. But, given a couple of rotten hires, it could fall from the top....though I wouldn't take that side of the wager.

That probably isn't true. The tradition and brand of the program has already been established. People said some of those same things about Arizona when Lute left.

I agree. With a reasonably good hire, the Duke brand should continue (especially with their niche of "academics" and top basketball). Look at UCLA post Wooden or Arizona post Olson. Agree that it would take more than one wrong hires to wreck it. Not likely. In fact, with a good young coach, they might even be resurgent.

I would rather have TD, Gates or Shareef than those guys.

I don't know what Marshall's options are, but I imagine he would be expensive. And for all of the love the Bay Area gets here (and I love it too), a lot of people really don't like it that much here. And a lot of coaches don't really live anywhere but in the gym, film room and on the road recruiting anyway.
